According to Aakash Chopra, Shubman Gill is expected to replace Yashasvi Jaiswal as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner in India’s forthcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.
The Men in Blue will meet Ibrahim Zadran and company in three T20Is, the first of which will be contested on Thursday, January 11 in Mohali.
Gill, Jaiswal, and Rohit are the three specialist openers chosen by the Indian selection on Sunday.
Chopra predicted that Gill would beat Jaiswal to the opening slot in a video posted on his YouTube channel:
Surprisingly, KL Rahul’s name does not appear on this list. Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rohit Sharma are all in contention for the opening spot.
As a result, one of them will have to sit out. The former India opener went on to say:
Yashasvi will very certainly be requested to sit out, and Rohit and Gill will open because Gill is the older member.
He has more seniority than Yashasvi Jaiswal. He varies too much in the T20 format, which is also true.
Gill and Jaiswal started the current T20I series against South Africa for India.
While the Punjab right-hander scored only eight runs in two innings, the Mumbai southpaw scored 60 runs in the last T20I after getting out for a duck in the previous game.
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma – KL Rahul’s removal from India’s team, according to Aakash Chopra
Aakash Chopra believes KL Rahul’s omission from the T20I series against Afghanistan is questionable.
In the 2022 World Cup, India’s top three were Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli.
KL Rahul has been dropped or has not been selected, there is no clarification, but he is not present. That is also something that may be discussed.
Chopra said that the Karnataka player might have played the wicketkeeper-batter role in the middle order, as he did in recent ODIs and Tests.
In T20Is, he has a strike rate of more than 135, which is not awful.
There are no available places in any case, and you play him in the middle in ODIs so you might have done it here as well.
Even in Tests, you play him lower in the lineup. However, you stated that you must make certain changes.
Rahul has 2265 runs in 68 T20I innings, with an exceptional average of 37.75 and a strike rate of 139.12.
However, he has never batted lower than No. 4 in T20Is and may have to demonstrate his abilities in the middle order in
IPL 2024 if he aspires to be a part of India’s T20 World Cup team in 2024.
