On Friday, January 19, the Otago Sparks took on the Central Hinds in the 27th match of the Women’s Super Smash 2023-24 at Dunedin’s University Oval.
Otago won the match by six wickets in only 16.3 overs.
The Wellington Blaze remains at the top of the points standings, with six victories in nine matches and a net run rate of +0.82.
The Central Hinds have played all ten games and are presently positioned below Wellington.
They now have four victories with a net run rate of -0.14.
The Otago Sparks have won five of their nine matches and are third in the point standings. Their net run rate is -0.11.
Northern Brave Women remain in fourth place after three victories in eight matches. Their net run rate is -0.17.
The Canterbury Magicians and Auckland Hearts are in last position, with two victories apiece.
Canterbury has a net run rate of +0.23, while Auckland is significantly behind at -0.72.
Clinical Otago secured a convincing win against Central Hinds
Otago won the toss against the Central Hinds and decided to bowl.
The Hinds lost four wickets by the time they had scored 18 runs.
Emma McLeod and Rosemary Mair shared a 53-run partnership for fifth wicket.
McLeod got 23 runs off 34 deliveries, while Mair scored 32 runs off 35 deliveries.
Claudia Green scored 15 runs off 11 deliveries at the end of the game, helping Central Hinds pass the 100-run barrier.
They scored 107 runs in 20 overs, losing seven wickets.
Emma Black was Otago’s most effective bowler, capturing four wickets for 17 runs in four overs.
Linsey Smith grabbed two wickets, while Eden Carson picked up one.
Suzie Bates and Bella James gave Otago a solid start, scoring 60 runs for the first wicket.
Bates missed short on a half-century, being removed for 44 runs off 29 deliveries.
Otago didn’t have any problem after such a hot start.
They won the match in 16.3 overs and had six wickets in hand. Black received the Player of the Match award for her bowling effort.
