The Northern Knights Women defeated Auckland Hearts by 19 runs in the 21st game of the Women’s Super Smash 2023–24 at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval. Read about top run scorers and wicket-takers.
Knights were put to bat first after losing the toss. Early in the innings, opener Caitlin Gureey was the victim. Chamari Athapaththu demonstrated her talent by amassing a spectacular fifty runs to maintain her team leading the match.
In the middle overs, Jess Watkin and Sam Curtis gave her a lot of assistance. In the end, they managed a creditable 133/7 in 20 overs. Fran Jonas and Anna Browning both took two wickets.
Auckland Hearts’ Izzy Gaze and Saachi Shahri departed early in the pursuit. Captain Maddy Green continued her excellent form, hitting three fours and scoring 32 runs in 35 balls.
Brooke Halliday and Prue Catton contributed significantly throughout the middle overs. But the other batsmen let up a lot of runs; in 20 overs, they moved from 89/3 to 114/7, losing the match by 19 runs.
The most impressive bowler was Marama Downes, who took two wickets in her four-over session while only giving up 24 runs. Nensi Patel, Chamari Athapaththu, and Shriya Naidu each claimed one wicket.

Top run scorers
The Otago Sparks skipper Suzie Bates leads the run-scoring list with 328 runs after three fifty-score runs in seven innings. Wellington’s skipper, Amelia Kerr, is now placed second with three fifty-plus totals and 255 runs from six innings.
Canterbury hitters Kate Anderson and Frances Mackay are still placed third and fourth, respectively. Hearts skipper Maddy Green moved up two spots to claim sixth after scoring 165 runs in four innings.
Hollie Armitage dropped a place to take sixth place. Bella James, Georgia Plimmer, and Hannah Rowe are still ranked seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively. Chamari Athapaththu, who scored 113 runs in four innings, shot up from the 30th to the 10th position.
With 11 scalps, Wellington skipper Amelia Kerr continues to lead the group in wickets taken. Skye Bowden, a medium pacer from Auckland, maintains her second-place ranking with ten scalps. Sarah Asmussen of Canterbury held onto her third-place finish with nine wickets.
Poppy Jay Watkins, from Otago, finished with eight scalps at 9.75, moving up one spot to fifth place. Emma Black fell one position to 19.12, placing her in sixth position. Gabby Sullivan is placed seventh with an average of 20.87.
Marama Downes rose from the 12th rank to the eighth with an average of 15.28. Lea Tahuhu is still in ninth place with her current score of 18.14. Xara Jetly fell from eighth to tenth position at 18.57.
