Neeraj Chopra, a world-leading and fourth-career-best javelin thrower, started his Diamond League title defense with a comfortable win in the season-opening leg here on Friday.
With a world-leading throw of 88.67 meters, Chopra made it to the top of the pile on his first attempt with the fourth-best effort of his career.
He kept up with the lead till the finish to win the occasion in his second appearance at the Qatar Sports Club.
He had completed fourth in his most memorable appearance here in 2018. Silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic went excruciatingly near Chopra’s best imprint with a subsequent round toss of 88.63m, four centimeters shy of the Indian’s work.
Additionally, Vadlejch had placed second at the Tokyo Olympics. He had likewise won a silver in the Doha Precious Stone Association last year with a 90.88m toss.
Anderson Peters, the current world champion, came in third with a modest best throw of 85.88 meters after winning the competition here last year with a monster throw of 93.07 meters.
Chopra, who has a personal best of 89.94 meters, was unable to maintain the pace of his first attempt, sending the spear only to 86.04 meters and then 85.47 meters before fouling his fourth throw. In his fifth and sixth attempts, he managed 84.37 and 85.62 meters, respectively.
