Wimbledon friday: djokovic, alcaraz jabeur, sakkari, norrie, and sinner. The fifth day of Wimbledon 2022 was a lot of fun – we saw four American players on the men’s side and one on the women’s side. It also kicked off with Novak Djokovic cruising through his match, 6-2, 6-2 against Cameron Norrie in just 106 minutes! And then there was Frances Tiafoe and Ons Jabeur who both advanced to round three in the singles. Both were winners of first-round matches over seeded competitors.
U.S. Tennis players play at Wimbledon today include Francis Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, John Isner, Steve Johnson and Maxime Cressy while Alison Riske-Amritraj is the only woman American to play tomorrow.
No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic defeated his Serbian counterpart in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 to notch 35 consecutive victories at Centre Court.
Maria Sakkari, of Greece, lost to Maria of Germany in straight sets. Maria, 34-years-old, is the oldest player left in the tournament. She had a recent return from maternity leave after her second child was born this past year.
Frances Tiafoe, who is ranked 23 in the world and faced off against a giant from Kazakhstan, Alexander Bublik. In a difficult four set match, Tiafoe wins the battle in three tie breaking sets. Despite the barrage of aces from Bublik, Tiafoe won with a lot of errors by the Kazakh. This will be his first foray into the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Tim van Rijthoven, who was the seventh player in a while to reach the fourth round of the Grand Slam, won his first round against Nikoloz Basilashvili (ranking 22).
Against Diane Perry, third-seeded Ons Jabeur won 6-2, 6-3. Jabeur controlled the match from start to finish and won 14 consecutive points, eventually moving on to the fourth round.
Today’s lineup at Wimbledon features several talented American players, as well as some of the favorites who are still left in the competition. Francis Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, John Isner, Steve Johnson, Jack Sock and Maxime Cressy will all be playing on the men’s side today, while Alison Riske-Amritraj is the lone woman from the U.S. playing on Friday. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Cameron Norrie, Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur and Angelique Kerber are also scheduled to play today.
