Although on the second day of Wimbledon, Andy Murray resumed play, and Roger Federer made a surprise appearance on Center Court. Last year, in September, he retired from tennis and has been invited back to the All England Club to celebrate his career journey this afternoon. As well, the eight-time Wimbledon champion, whose men’s record could be equaled by Novak Djokovic this fortnight, returns for the event.
Though Andy Murray will face fellow Briton Ryan Peniston in his opening tournament match at Wimbledon 2023, defending women’s champion Elena Rybakina will open the day’s game against Shelby Rodgers. Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, and Daniil Medvedev are among the top seeds in action on a busy day at Wimbledon, but rain may interrupt the day, and heavy rain is expected in the afternoon.
However, Katie Boulter and British No. 1 Cameron Norie (who reached the semifinals last year) are due to start their campaigns. Coco Gauff suffered the biggest loss on the opening day on Monday when she fell to seventh seed Sofia Kenin. Meanwhile, Venus Williams came out fighting as the 43-year-old played through an injury sustained during her loss to Elina Svitolina.
What did Bolton say about it?
Roger Federer will return to Wimbledon today to celebrate the eight-time champion’s career. Federer retired from tennis last September, and it will take a while for Wimbledon to “thank” the Swiss.
“It’s a pleasure to say that Roger will be with us tomorrow, and we’ll have a special celebration on Center Court before kick-off, who has won the most singles gentlemen’s titles at Wimbledon. To honor him as a person,” said Sally Bolton, president of the All England Club, on Monday.
“They will have a moment to celebrate his achievements, and we think for us, of course, to thank them for all the memories,” Bolton said.
According to Bolton, Serena Williams, who won seven of her 23 major singles titles at Wimbledon, was also invited. Bolton said of Williams: “But she… she’s pregnant, so she can’t travel.” If you have any queries regarding the above article, share them with us through the comment section below.
