Wimbledon 2023: Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic start the day with victories: At the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, defending champion Novak Djokovic and women’s top seed LGA Swiatek opened their campaigns with victories. However, Coco Gauff and Venus Williams bowed out on the opening day yesterday.
Starting his quest for an 8th Wimbledon and 24th Grand Slam title, men’s world number two Djokovic beat 68th-ranked Pedro Cachin of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, 7-6, (7/4) Defeated. The Serb will now face 70th-ranked Jordan Thomson of Australia in the second round.
Among the well-known players who advanced to the second round were fourth seed Jessica Pegula, Casper Ruud, who has appeared in three Grand Slam finals, Victoria Azarenka, who has won multiple Grand Slams, and Andrey Rublev.
In women’s singles, seventh seed Gauff fell to fellow American Sofia Kenin 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, while Elina Svitolina of Ukraine advanced to the second round by defeating five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams. Svitolina defeated Williams in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
World No. 1 Swiatek defeated China’s Zhu Lin, who was rated 34th, 6-1, 6-3.
