Why, despite retiring from international cricket, is MS Dhoni ineligible to participate in any ‘Legends’ event? The ever-increasing popularity of Twenty20 cricket has taken over the fans in India, and the excitement among the public has resulted in cricket greats stepping out of retirement to perform for the crowd. Even legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, and others are back on the field and playing in different leagues.
Fans are in for a treat when they get to see these superstars compete once more, but there is one legend who has yet to participate in any of these so-called “Legends” tournaments. Yes, we’re talking about MS Dhoni. Even though Dhoni left international cricket in 2020, he hasn’t played in any other tournaments besides the IPL.
IPL is why he’s not playing with the Legends
IPL is the reason why Dhoni doesn’t play in any “Legends’ League.” According to the rules, a player has to leave Indian cricket in order to play or coach for another team that is not part of BCCI. So, if Dhoni wants to play in any other league, he has to stop playing in the IPL as well. When Dhoni leaves the T20 league, he will be able to coach CSK’s sister team, Johannesburg Super Kings. He will also be able to coach the Yellow Army.
Suresh Raina and Robin Uthappa both recently said they were leaving Indian cricket. Raina already plays in a tournament for legends, and now Uthappa can also play in any league. He can also sign up for the Big Bash League, The Hundred, Vitality T20 Blast, or any other tournament.
Since Dhoni has already said he will play in IPL 2023, the legendary former Indian skipper won’t be seen in any other tournament until the middle of 2023. Once he leaves the IPL, he can be a big deal in any other league.
