Who will be Next MLB Star Traded Today?: When It Comes To Major League Baseball, The Rumors Don’t Last Long.
Major League Baseball’s trade deadline ended on August 1, leading to a frenetic stretch that saw Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Lucas Giolito switch teams. To think, those moves came months after Shohei Ohtani predicted. Ultimately, the Los Angeles Angles decided not to trade their star, even though he was encroaching on free agency. Only time will tell whether they’ll come to regret that decision, or whether they’ll be rewarded for their faith – be it a spot in the playoffs, and/or, ideally, a new long-term deal.
If you’ve enjoyed the Ohtani speculation as well as the actual deals involving star players, fear not. The beauty of baseball is that you are only a few months away from the start of a new feeding craze. The reality is that, for a certain kind of person, this is what makes MLB so appealing. We say, fair enough.
With that in mind, CBS Sports has identified eight stars who could be on the move. Of course, this is more of an exercise in reading the tea leaves than an exact science. But below we’ve put together our own explanations for why we think each of these players could be in trade rumors as soon as this winter. Note that players are ranked in order of their availability.
1 Tyler Glasnow, RHP, Rays
Glasnow is a terrific talent who could win a Cy Young Award if he is ever able to stay on the mound for an entire season. Unfortunately, his availability has been severely affected by injuries in recent years, including Tommy John surgery that destroyed most of his 2022 campaign.
2 Juan Soto, OF, Padres
There is no doubt about it. The priests have disappointed. Add to this how rumors have already surfaced that San Diego will not sign a long-term deal to keep Soto in town beyond his winter 2024 free agency date, and it seems only natural that they would look to increase his value this winter. Will guess.
Soto remains an elite hitter. He has great eyesight, and he makes a lot of hard contacts, though often at low launch angles that match up better with singles and doubles than home runs. His fielding isn’t that valuable, and it looks like he’s going to transition to DH at some point in the coming years.
3 Shane Bieber, RHP, Guardians
Any possibility that Bieber was moved by the Guardians at the deadline was erased when he was placed on the injured list with an elbow injury. It’s a tough break for a Guardians front office that was able to move Corey Kluber and Mike Clevinger in recent years before major injuries.
4. Corbin Burnes, RHP, Brewers
Burns is the first of three brewers to be represented on this list. Each member of the trio is leaving for free agency in the winter of 2024. Burns has been listed first as he already has a public spat with the franchise over the arbitration process, which he admitted has damaged their relationship.
Even though Burns and Brewers seem to have reconciled, it doesn’t look like the pair will be together for long. He has been one of the best starters in the game since 2020. Barring injury or unexpected development, he should be in line to receive the massive free-agent contract that franchises like Milwaukee rarely offer.
5. Dylan Cease, RHP, White Sox
Cease, last year’s AL Cy Young Award runner-up hasn’t been as dominant so far this season. However, he remains an above-average starter who also has at-bat-missing ability. Factor in that he won’t be eligible for free agency until the winter of 2025, and he’s undeniably an attractive trade target.
6. Willy Adames, SS, Brewers
Adams is the second of three brewers on this list. Like the other two, he is heading to free agency after next season. Again, it’s unfortunate that he’s in the midst of his least productive big-league campaign (as judged by OPS+) due to a decline in contact quality.
7. Brandon Woodruff, RHP, Brewers
Woodruff has appeared in trade rumors before. He’ll certainly populate them again this winter, considering he’ll be a year away from reaching free agency.
Keep in mind, the rest of the season is going to be critical for Woodruff and the Brewers as it relates to proving he’s healthy and re-establishing his value. He missed most of the campaign due to a shoulder strain. He must prove he has the same caliber of pitcher he was before the injury, which means two All-Star Game appearances and an above-average starter with a top-five finish at the Cy Young Award. His name.
8. Luis Robert, OF, White Sox
Robert’s inclusion is similar to that of his teammate Cees. The White Sox are a bad team with no clear path to improvement. Like Cees, Robert would bring a lot of young talent to a business. That talent, in turn, would allow the White Sox to begin another rebuild.
