On Thursday, during the match between the U.S. and the Netherlands, the U.S. captain scored a powerful header after a collision with her Lyon teammate, Danielle van de Donk.
This goal helped the U.S. women’s national team secure a 1-1 draw and kept their hopes of winning Group E alive.
If the two-time defending champs can beat Portugal and maintain their plus-2 goal differential against the Netherlands, they can claim the top spot and have a better chance of avoiding England, Germany or France on their road to the final.
Who scored for USA Soccer vs Netherlands?
The match between the USA and Netherlands was a game of two halves, resulting in a draw. The Netherlands began the game in a frantic manner, while the USA played with poise. However, the situation quickly changed when Jill Roord scored an amazing goal in the 17th minute, leaving the USA undone and struggling for the remainder of the first half.
During the second half, the USA did not necessarily figure out the Netherlands’ strategy but managed to regain their composure and play their own game. The match saw an amazing equalizer by Lindsey Horan, who headed a corner home with great authority. Both teams played with high spirits and fought hard in the final minutes. In the end, there was not much of a difference between the two teams. With four points and a better goal difference, the USA now leads Group E. while the Netherlands comes in second.
Moving forward, the USA will face Portugal, while the Netherlands will play against Vietnam to conclude their group play.
These two teams may meet again in the future, and if both win their remaining games,
they could potentially repeat the same match in the semi-finals.
Both teams are strong enough to achieve this feat.
Lyon teammates Lindsey Horan and Daniëlle van de Donk were seen hugging and smiling together,
despite having a heated exchange just before Horan scored a tying goal.
The two are co-workers in France and were able to put any disagreements behind them, as shown in a
a photo posted on the Netherlands’ Twitter feed after the match.
The Netherlands took an early lead, but Lindsey Horan and her teammates remained confident that they could equalize.
Despite fighting for possession and expending a lot of energy in the first half, the momentum
eventually shifted in their favour.
In the 62nd minute, Horan scored the tying goal with a header from a corner kick delivered by Rose Lavelle.
