Ms Dhoni is one player who has given so much to India. Right from the time he came to squad as a long haired destroyer of the ball, he has won hearts everywhere with his temperament and style of play. So much so that he at one point, he was one of the most reliable finishers in the game. Maybe calling him India’s most loved cricketer is completely warranted. Dhoni’s contribution to the game is so much that his contribution is probably more than Sachin’s.
He captained us to three major trophies:
One of the main reasons that Dhoni will never be forgotten is because he led from the front when India won three major trophies – The World T20 in 2007, the World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He also held the mace for being the top Test team in world cricket and that speaks volumes of his talent.
Dhoni was instrumental in also ensuring we won all the other major international trophies, at least in the limited overs format. Series wins versus Australia, England and New Zealand prove that he was a born winner and really gave it his all.
He finished everything in his path
Dhoni was one of the main reasons that India won many games in the final overs of the match. Fans knew we could depend on Captain Cool to see off any challenge and take us through all the way. Dhoni has finished so many games for us and played crucial innings to ensure we do not crumble.
Dhoni’s finishing abilities are unparalleled and he has the all-time greatest record when it comes to finishing games. Dhoni was able to finish games off at his own pace and this makes him one of the most lethal players of all time.
He improved our fielding:
Once he took over the captaincy, Dhoni took the hard call of dropping the seniors so that the younger, fitter players could take over on the field. Despite facing criticism, his call was right and India went on to become one of the best fielding sides in the world.
Dhoni himself has said that he wanted India’s fielding to improve so that we could save important runs on the field and make our job easier.
He showed the world a different way to lead:
Until Dhoni came, no one in India felt that a captain could be so cool and calm. Dhoni showed the world how to approach a game with the right attitude and at no point in his playing career did he let the stress show on his face.
Players themselves have credited Dhoni’s style as they felt much more at ease around him. He never let his guard down and abused any teammate at any point in his career. A true gent of the game.
