Gavi is set to keep playing for Barcelona this season with #30 on his back. He will become a free agent in the summer after La Liga rejected his Camp Nou contract yet again. The midfielder must remain in the club’s Juvenile A records, according to La Liga.
They think that Barcelona cannot afford to keep Gavi under the terms of the new contract because they would then pay him more than their salary cap. In January, Gavi signed a new contract with Barcelona and received the renowned number 6.
However, La Liga has spoiled the party by preventing the new contract from being registered and requesting that the player switches to the number 30 uniform.
Javier Tebas on Gavi’s agreement at Barcelona:
Barcelona cannot file Gavi under his new contract, according to Javier Tebas, president of La Liga. The initial appeal by the Catalan club was successful, but La Liga opposed it and overturned the decision. Tebas stated the following last month regarding the contract situation:
“We will go against it. The decision will be made. According to estimates, Barcelona would play him, but they would do so under his previous contract. He’s signed up, so he’ll play, yes. The issue is the decision. It is in the careful step and we will go against it.
We have a couple of days to go (to pursue). We are going to fight the order.” Tebas provided an explanation for why La Liga had rejected Gavi’s new contract while he was present at the 7th Madrid Sports Press Association awards ceremony earlier this year. He stated,
“The fact that it takes effect the following season causes the problem of not registering Gavi. It is possible to deny it for the upcoming season because Barça faces a deficit of more than 200 million for that upcoming season. It does not seem right.”
He added: “Amounts for the savings for Piqué and Memphis are now available. Barça must make a decision, but it’s important to keep in mind what Barça’s vice president said: they have to cut the wage bill. Let’s see when we start, but I think between 600 and 400 million euros or a little more.” If Barcelona cannot find room in their wage bill, Gavi will become a free agent in the summer.
