Former South African batsman AB de Villiers claimed that after seeing Yong Yashasvi Jaiswal bat for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he recognised he had a particular skill. De Villiers reacted to the Indian opener hitting a century on his Test debut by remarking that Jaiswal seemed to have a lot of time to play the ball.
Jaiswal, 21, had an impressive Test debut in Dominica against the West Indies. He struck 171 from 387 balls while opening the batting with Rohit Sharma, hitting 16 fours and a six. As the visitors went on to win the Test by an innings and 141 runs, the Indian opening pair contributed 229 in the first inning.
De Villiers praised Jaiswal for his outstanding effort in his first Test match after watching it back.
According to the South African’s YouTube channel:
“It’s unusual for a rookie player to hit 100 runs in his debut innings of a Test match. I immediately saw something very unique about him after seeing him play in the IPL. You may always check the player’s time remaining when facing the ball. When he’s playing, he has time. He will not be bothered by the ball’s tempo. Even when he is playing spin, he appears to have time.”
Jaiswal will have a successful future, the 39-year-old added.
“While some players may appear rushed, he just gives the impression that he has time to think things through. He is a highly gifted young man and an exciting possibility for India’s future. I was thrilled to see him score 100 in his first Test match.”
Despite only having participated in 16 first-class games, Jaiswal has amassed 2016 runs at an average of 84, including 10 hundreds.
Aakash Chopra on Yong Yashasvi Jaiswal: “He’s not a one-trick pony”
While Jaiswal has had a wonderful start to his Test debut, veteran India opener Aakash Chopra believes that he has the ability to succeed in all formats.
Chopra recalls talking with the Indian teenager a few years earlier when appearing on De Villiers’ YouTube channel.
“When I spoke with him [in 2019], I was quite certain that he had a bright future ahead of him. He was modest, down to earth, and aware that it would take a lot of effort, but he was also completely certain – 100 percent certain – that he would succeed. I had a modest sense of optimism about his future. After his maiden Test century, I am now quite certain that he will have a wonderful international career across all three formats. He has more than one skill.”
In addition to Tests, Jaiswal has been selected for the Indian T20I team, which will play a five-match series against the West Indies from August 3 to August 13.
