IND vs. WI 2023: Indian dominance over West Indies in the Test series continued on Day 1 of the second Test at Port of Spain in Trinidad where they were 288/4 at the conclusion of play.
Virat Kohli (87* off 161) contributed another fantastic half-century to the innings after India’s openers put on a century stand after being ordered to bat first after losing the toss.
As skipper Rohit Sharma (80 off 143) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (57 off 74) scored 139 runs for the first wicket India, who gave bowler Mukesh Kumar his debut owing to Shardul Thakur’s injury. Got off to a solid start in their first innings. Rohit pulled Kemar Roach for a six over square leg in the fifth over after a cautious beginning.
Jaiswal joined the action in the following over by hitting Alzarri Joseph for a four and a six. As they effortlessly found limits in the first session, India’s openers appeared to be in no trouble. The captain, Rohit, finished off his half-century in fine fashion by slamming Roach for a maximum over square leg. Jaiswal reached his fifty at the other end after hitting two successive fours off Joseph’s bowling.
The final over before lunch, when Jason Holder was bowling. Alick Athanaze dropped Jaiswal at slip adding to West Indies’ displeasure. At 121/0, India entered the first break.
When Jaiswal was caught at deep gully after edging a reckless drive from Holder early in the second session the hosts scored.
In the second session, West Indies made a fierce comeback and took three more wickets. Shubman Gill (10) was pinned behind when he attempted to block a Roach-length delivery that held its line. Rohit’s impressive knock came to an end as Jomel Warrican cleaned him up. A tossed-up delivery that spun just enough to evade Rohit’s front foot push smacked the off-stump. India went to tea at 182/4 after Ajinkya Rahane (#8) sliced one from Shannon Gabriel back onto his stumps.

For the fifth wicket. Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja (36* off 84) put up an uninterrupted 106 runs giving India the upper hand once again. With a punch down the leg side off Joseph on his 21st ball Kohli got off to a good start and finished with eight fours in a strong innings.
In the 60th over he hit two consecutive boundaries off Roach and Jadeja also contributed by locating the opening between mid-off and cover.
In his 500th international match, Kohli earned a well-deserved fifty points with a cover drive off Warrican. He will need an additional 13 runs on Day 2 to reach the century mark in his historic match.
