Bangladesh couldn’t match that score, so the hosts won the game and the series. A few of the top-order players for the West Indies did their part, but it was Rovman Powell’s big hitting at the end of the innings that helped the West Indies team overpower Bangladesh.
The Magical Powell
Powell came to bat when the score was 100/3 in the 13th over. He did some great late-order hitting to help the West Indies reach a vast 193/5 in their 20 overs. The talented right-hander scored 23 runs in one over from Shakib Al Hasan. He also hit six sixes during his entertaining 28-ball knock, which led to an unbeaten 61. Powell’s batting was so good that it wasn’t a surprise when he was later named Player of the Match.
Shakib’s Contribution to Vain
Bangladesh had to score at a rate of almost 10 runs per over to win, and Shakib Al Hasan, a veteran all-rounder, did his part by making an unbeaten 68. The problem was that he didn’t get much help from his teammates. Wickets fell often, and Bangladesh was 35 runs short of winning.
Bangladesh’s top order didn’t do well. Openers Anamul Haque (3) and Liton Das (5) were out quickly, and captain Mahmudullah (11) didn’t do much better when he came in at No. 4. Shakib and Afif Hossain (34 runs) batted together for 55 runs, which gave the guests a glimmer of hope. However, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran used his bowlers well to make sure the victory target was never really in danger.
West Indies Gradually Gaining Power
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is coming up in a few months, and the West Indies are quietly putting together a good team that might surprise some people in Australia. Pooran is doing an excellent job as captain, and players like Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd hit well late in the game, which is something we’ve come to expect from good West Indies teams over the years.
Their bowling is also pretty good. Hayden Walsh’s leg spin works well with a group of quick bowlers who change up their speed well. If everything goes well at the T20 World Cup, there’s no reason why the Caribbean team can’t do well and finish around the top.
