Zimbabwe Cricket has allegedly banned players Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta for four months for recreational drug usage.
During a dope test in December of last year, the two tested positive for a forbidden recreational substance.
According to Cricbuzz, Madhevere and Mavuta received their penalty on Thursday, January 25, after confessing to drug usage during a disciplinary hearing a few days earlier.
The article further stated that the two Zimbabwe cricketers will be penalised 50% of their earnings for three months beginning in January 2024.
ZC has zero tolerance for drugs and drug use, and in imposing the sanctions, the Disciplinary Committee considered that drug use was a serious offense and that the two players’ breach had brought the organisation and the game of cricket into disrepute,” according to ZC’s official release.โ
In making the decision, the Committee also considered some mitigating factors, with both players expressing remorse and having already begun working on withdrawing from the habit and cleaning up their systems,” the official statement continued.
Apart from Madhevere and Mavuta, another Zimbabwean player, Kevin Kasuza is alleged to have been barred from participating in any cricket-related activities until a hearing.
It has been stated that he, too, failed a drug test. A disciplinary hearing will be held soon to address the issue.
