Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour has backed Shubman Gill despite the youngster’s many poor results in recent friendlies. Referring to his loss in the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica, he said you can’t judge a player by his shot. He went on to describe Gill as the future of batting in India.
India defeated the West Indies by one set and 141 runs in the first Test of a two-game series in Dominica. While rookie flyhalf Yashasvi Jaiswal and Captain Rohit Sharma made a hundred, Gill, who hit the number 3, was knocked out for 6 balls from 11 balls. The 23-year-old had previously failed in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). Against Australia, he scored points of 13 and 18 in the oval.
Rathour publicly supported Gill and foresaw a promising future for him in Test cricket during a news conference on Sunday, July 16.
“We won’t evaluate him based on a single inning. He has plenty of time, and because he is qualified for the role, he will undoubtedly do well for us. He is a patient player who can advance the game while still being a good stroke player. It is quite helpful to have such a batter at No. 3, he said.”
According to the former India opener, Gill has a tonne of potential, which he has previously demonstrated in various forms.
“He has scored runs in Test cricket as well. Taking the time even if it may occasionally take some time in a certain format. He is without a doubt the Indian team’s starting batsman of the future given his talent. In all three formats, he will play for the Indian squad for a very long period, Rathour continued.”
Rathour praised Gill, saying that the right-handed batter is training hard and has the character and ability to succeed as a major player.
The man said:
“Although he is taking his time, the good news is that he is still working hard on things. He not only possesses the potential, but also the temperament that makes one a major player. Without a doubt, he will continue to play all three forms for a very long time.”
Gill’s test results aren’t very impressive. He has scored 927 runs at an average of 31.96 in 17 games.
He believes that this is his proper place in the lengthier forms. – Gill on Vikram Rathour at No. 3
Gill personally asked the management to give him the No. 3 slot, Indian captain Rohit disclosed in the lead-up to the Dominica Test. Vikram Rathour stated the think tank agreed with him when he expressed his views on the subject.
The 54-year-old went on to say:
“Since the team has three openers, one had to go to No. 3. The good news is that Shubman himself stated, “I’d like to go No. 3,” so it originated from him. He bases this on the fact that he has always played at No. 3 or 4 whether playing first-class cricket or for India. He believes that is where he belongs in the lengthier formats. Therefore, we were all pleased with that choice. Rahul [Dravid] and Rohit [Sharma] felt that it would be best for him to play at No. 3 following that talk.”
The second Test between India and the West Indies will take place in Port of Spain in Trinidad from July 20 to July 24. Gill will play in that match.
