Tilak Varma had an amazing international debut in the opening T20I match against West Indies on Thursday at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. Earning the accolades of former India batter Robin Uthappa. Varma was characterized by Uthappa as a highly smart cricketer with a strong mind on his shoulders.
India lost the first T20I of the five-match series to West Indies with a score of 4 runs. Their batting struggled as they were reduced to 145/9 in the 150-run chase. Varma, however, had a significant influence right away. He led India’s chase with 39 off 22 after taking a brilliant running catch in the outfield to dismiss Johnson Charles.
Varma made an impressive debut in international cricket by smashing the second and third balls he faced from Alzarri Joseph for sixes.
Uthappa praised the child and told JioCinema:
“We hadn’t anticipated that 6 would launch his international career. He made it seem simple. These are some truly magnificent shots, and even the simple sound of the bat speaks volumes about how secure he must be feeling right now. And I believe he has a really solid head on his shoulders. He plays cricket really well, in my opinion.
The left-hander was inserted to bat at position four after the Indian openers were cheaply removed from the contest. Obed McCoy killed Ishan Kishan for six, and Shubman Gill was stumped by Akeal Hosein for three. Hardik Pandya (19), the captain, and Suryakumar Yadav (21) both made starts but were unable to continue.
Wish he had continued and scored a 50 – Robin Uthappa evaluates the innings of Varma
Uthappa expressed his thoughts on Varma’s first innings in international cricket. Saying he was unsurprised by how fluidly the southpaw batted. But he encouraged the 20-year-old to keep playing and get a fifty.
In the pregame conversation, we discussed how he likes to step up the ante when he bats, and that’s exactly what he did from the get-go. That is where he wants to put pressure back on the opposition. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised by the way he started, but I wish he had continued and scored 50 in that first game, said Uthappa.
At Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday, the second Twenty20 game of the series between India and the West Indies will take place.
