Sanjay Manjrekar offered a fascinating comment on Akash Madhwal’s bowling style after the pacer took a five-wicket pull against Lucknow Super Goliaths.
After a relatively easy victory over the Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator match, the Mumbai Indians will play the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 of the 2023 Indian Premier League on Friday night.
Akash Madhwal was MI’s star of the night because he took the fifth-cheapest five-wicket haul in league history.
He surrendered five runs and picked as numerous wickets in 3.3 overs, as LSG were bowled out on just 101 while pursuing 183.
When Madhwal bowled out Prerak Mankad for 3, he took the first wicket of the innings. However, in his second over, the uncapped pacer bowled out Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni off consecutive deliveries.
While he fortified Badoni, he effectively prompted a thick external edge off Pooran, with Ishan Kishan taking a basic catch behind the wickets.
Badoni attempted a wild cross-batted shot but was unable to get in the ball’s line, and Madhwal bowled a delivery from the back of the length.
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former India batter, recalled Madhwal’s dismissal and noted a particular aspect of Madhwal’s bowling that has the potential to become a “trend” in T20 cricket after MI’s resounding victory.
Manjrekar stated that none of Madhwal’s deliveries to Badoni contained any “variations”; Prior to the dismissal, the pacer had bowled the LSG batter three balls.
“Badoni and Pooran’s wickets served as a testament to Madhwal’s class. A totally different thing, that he does, that we don’t see frequently nowadays, is that no variety is his variety. It very well may a pattern proceed.
The batter prepares for a variation if you bowl two seam-up deliveries that dot. When analyzing Madhwal’s bowling on ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar made the observation that he would prepare for a slower ball or a bouncer.
“As was to be expected, Badoni was preparing for a variety, but Madhwal didn’t provide any. Additionally, that is his area of expertise,” the former India batter added.
As the side seeks a spot in the final of the 2023 season, Madhwal will once more play a crucial role for Rohit Sharma and co. In the title match, MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings will face the winners of Qualifier 2.
