Virat Kohli: 2023 review in numbers
Kohli faced a protracted dry spell from 2020 to most of 2022, which ended after India toured England in 2022.
Since his comeback to action, he has been in exquisite form, beginning with a productive 2022 Asia Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.
The ace hitter maintained his form in 2023 as well. The fact that the year was predominantly centered on one-day international cricket, thanks to the World Cup, aided much.
Nonetheless, he amassed runs in all three forms and will be looking to extend his winning streak into 2024.
Kohli scored 2,048 runs at an average of 66.06 in 26 international innings. He also set a number of milestones, the most famous of which was being the first person to record 50 ODI hundreds.
1. Virat Kohli in Tests
Kohli scored his first Test century in more than three years in the fourth and final Test against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in 2023.
In the drew match, the right-handed hitter scored 186 runs off 364 deliveries as India won the series 2-1.
During his Caribbean tour, he also recorded a remarkable ton. Before getting struck out, the right-handed hitter scored 121 runs on 206 pitches.
Kohli scored 671 runs in 12 Test innings in 2023, averaging 55.92 and striking with a strike rate of 54.73.
Kohli hit 49 runs in the second innings of India’s World Test Championship (WTC) final defeat to Australia at The Oval.
2. Virat Kohli in ODIs
The majority of Kohli’s runs for 2023 came in ODIs, which included a record-breaking 2023 ODI World Cup campaign.
He became the first batter in history to score 700 runs in a single season, and he was a key figure in India’s strong run-up to the final, when they were defeated by Australia.
He started the year with two hundreds in Team India’s rout of Sri Lanka in January. While he struggled in the home bilateral series against Australia and New Zealand, he bounced back in the 2023 Asia Cup.
In the Super 4s stage, the right-handed hitter hit a spectacular century against Pakistan. His three hundreds in the 2023 ODI World Cup campaign were against Bangladesh, South Africa.
And New Zealand, with the last being the semi-final match at the Wankhede Stadium. Kohli has had six fifties in the competition, including one against Australia in the final.
3. Virat Kohli in T20s
Kohli’s last T20I appearance came in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England at the Adelaide Oval, meaning he did not play a single T20I in 2023.
The great hitter only has the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season to show for his efforts in the shortest format.
He had a productive season with the bat for RCB, but they ended sixth in the points table and missed out on the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
