Stefanie Korepin, Chief Programs Officer for USA Gymnastics, said:
“We can’t wait to host our first national championships in Tampa during the next Olympic cycle. Even though the Paris Games are still more than two years away, the sporting environment has seen a great deal of upheaval and potential during the past 12 months.
“This year’s OOFOS US Gymnastics Championships will be more competitive than ever with returning Olympians, intriguing breakout stars, and a bonus system in place to reward high difficulty in the men’s competition,” according to the press release.
The United States team used the occasion to recognise some of the more famous competitors this time around, including an Olympic gold medalist:
“With less than two years until the opening of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, 2020 Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey (Phoenix, Arizona/Oregon State University), silver medalist Jordan Chiles (Spring, Texas/World Champions Center), and Olympians Brody Malone (Aragon, Ga./Stanford University), Yul Moldauer (Wellington, Colo./5280 Gymnastics), and Shane Wiskus (Minneapolis)
It will be Carey and Chiles’ first competition since the Tokyo Olympics. Chiles won silver in the team competition there. Carey won the floor exercise gold medal.
Notably, Simone Biles is absent from the Championships for the first time since 2017. Suni Lee isn’t competing this year either, although she could return the next one.
Additionally, the Tampa Convention Center will play host to the 2022 United States Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show from August 18–21.
It will take place in tandem with the National Championship competition. On Saturday, Tampa will also host the induction ceremony for the USA Hall of Fame in 2022.
