Final Word
The most dramatic MMA moment of 2021 was during UFC 269. The promotion’s final fight of the year where Julianna Pena submitted the impossible Amanda Nunes to capture the bantamweight title. It was among the most shocking shocks in MMA history. And also a victory Pena ought to be proud of throughout her life. But, for many fans, the result wasn’t enough to show that she was Nunes superior.
The Brazilian also holds the featherweight title and was in control of the bantamweight division for so long. And had fought many tough fights. That it was difficult to not wonder whether she’d suffered a poor night at the office with Pena. Could it be an accident? Or was the former queen overmatched by her usurper?
The only way to address those questions is to arrange another fight. There is a good chance of that happening at some point at the beginning of the year. But it is impossible to ever know when the future of MMA.
