UEFA Women’s EURO 2022: Germany beats Austria
Germany beats Austria: Alexandra Popp has waited nine years for this. One after one after one goal, she managed to score in their match against Austria. Germany sends on to face France or the Netherlands in the semifinals.
Popp missed the last two editions of the competition in 2013 and 2017, but she was able to recover in time for last month’s game due to tests before the event. She was key to creating Germany’s chances and was clinical in front of goals as captain against Austria.
Germany caught the opposing team flat-footed for the opening goal, with their player Klara Bühl quickly turning over the ball and sending a cross to her teammate Lina Maghull who had a better chance of scoring from that position.
In the 90th minute, dangerous Popp exploited goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger and her rare lapse of concentration to send a goal in for Germany. The game could have finished 6-3, but instead, it finished 2-0 and was a hugely valuable game for Germany.
Austria showed a lot of defensive resilience, but their attacks were frustrated, hitting the post twice, and the crossbar once. They also had a good chance to score with a header against the post by Marina Georgieva in their first real chance of the game in the 13th, when they had made two other chances to score. Germany was also close on numerous opportunities, despite not scoring much offensively.
Germany’s national team for the European Championship (UEFA) has advanced to the semifinals for the first time since winning the Olympic gold medal in 2016. This is their first international tournament since they lost to Portugal and England. Finalists of last year’s UEFA Euro, will also now not be participating in this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
Germany defeated Austria 3-0 to win their second European Championship title. This is the seventh time Germany has won the Women’s EURO, tying Sweden for most championships. Throughout the tournament, Germany had an impressive record of scoring goals while conceding very few. The team was led by striker Dzsenifer Marozsan, who scored two goals and set up another. Keeper Nadine Angerer also played well, making several important saves throughout the game.
