Watford’s basketball career started in Alabama, which led him to play for Shades Valley High School and Irondale Middle School. After his sophomore year, he moved to Mountain Brook, Alabama where he played high school basketball for Mountain Brook High School. He was a highly touted five star prospect, and led his team to three consecutive Class 7A state championships from 2017-2019.
Zach Watford has had a successful freshman campaign, making the SEC All-Freshman Team. His career high was 22 points and he averaged 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds for LSU this season. After the season, Watford shared his intention to declare for the 2020 NBA draft. On August 3, he said he would return to LSU for his sophomore season. Watford had a career high of 30 points during the SEC Tournament in a game against Alabama. He averaged 16.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore. After declaring for the 2021 NBA draft, he hired an agent and forfeited his college eligibility.
Watford didn’t get drafted in the 2021 NBA draft but was offered a contract by Portland. He played so well on March 12, scoring 27 points and grabbing six rebounds, that his contract was shifted to a “standard deal.”
On July 17, 2022, Chandler Watford led his team to an NBA championship game victory. He scored 19 points and had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. His performance was awarded the MVP honors.
