The Seahawks made a name to have potential interest after Baker Mayfield was traded to the Panthers.
“I am told that internally, they have discussed the possibility of Garoppolo playing for them. They’ve done their film work to see how he would fit,” Fowler said.
He further explained that it could be “tricky” to pull off trade between NFC West rivals, but said the Seahawks have known that they could wait out the 49ers. They hope that they release Garoppolo since San Francisco needs to clear cap space to sign Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel to extensions.
The agent of Garoppolo, Don Yee, interacted with NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and said that his client was “progressing well and on schedule.” He denied a report that had emerged over the weekend that Yee had told the mediaperson that he could be headed to the Buccaneers to be the backup of Tom Brady.
“Over the weekend, a report came out that asserted that I had spoken to a media member about his future, but the report was false,” Yee told Pelissero.
Pelissero also reported an expectation in the league that Garoppolo will be traded before the end of the month.
The potential suitors’ list for Garoppolo has dwindled as the offseason quarterback carousel has slowed down. As per the trades:
- Russell Wilson is with the Broncos
- Carson Wentz is with the Commanders
- Deshaun Watson is with the Browns
- Matt Ryan is with the Colts
- Mayfield is with the Panthers
- The Saints signed Jameis Winston again
- The Steelers acquired Mitchell Trubisky and drafted Kenny Pickett
- The Falcons acquired Marcus Mariota and drafted Desmond Ridder
The Seahawks acquired Drew Lock in the Wilson trade to compete with Geno Smith for the starting QB role but they appear to have the most immediate need for a quarterback. As per Fowler, there are always obstacles trying to navigate a trade within the same division.
The ruling and subsequent punishment of Deshaun Watson following a hearing into the allegations regarding his sexual misconduct remains unsettled. The Browns were linked to Jimmy G provided that Watson be suspended the whole season. However, after absorbing a majority of the salary of Baker Mayfield in the Panthers trade, there is a chance that they might be less willing to take on more money and move on with Jacoby Brissett in the interim.
Garoppolo had led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship appearances. He is widely expected to be dealt this offseason as San Francisco prepares to hand the reins of the offense to 2021 No. 3 pick, Trey Lance.
What is complicating a trade for Garoppolo is the offseason shoulder surgery he had and the $24.2 million he owes in base salary for the 2022 season. He will be a free agent after the campaign.
In the last season, Garoppolo completed 68.3 percent of his passes with 3,810 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
