Wanindu Hasaranga, a star Sri Lankan wristspinner, was too excellent for Zimbabwe, bowling 7/19 in just 5.5 overs to enable his country win the ODI series by 2-0.
This is not the first time in men’s ODIs that a bowler has raced through an opposing batting line-up. As Hasaranga has bowled numerous fantastic spells.
1. Chaminda Vaas – 8/19, Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe, Colombo, 2001
Wanindu Hasaranga was not the only Sri Lankan spinner to take apart Zimbabwe’s batting line-up in an ODI in Colombo.
Hasaranga now holds the second-best ODI stats for a Sri Lankan, trailing only former pacer Chaminda Vaas.
The left-arm pacer was well-known for his pinpoint accuracy. And ability to smash batting lineups with the new ball, which he accomplished in 2001.
His amazing statistics of 8/19 at Colombo saw Zimbabwe bowled out for 38 runs.
Vaas crushed a powerful batting line-up that included Grant Flower, Stuart Carlisle, and Andy Flower, leaving the visitors stunned.
Sri Lanka won handily with nine wickets in hand, and Vaas’ record remains unbroken to date.
2. Shahid Afridi, 7/12, West Indies vs Pakistan, Providence, 2013
While Shahid Afridi struggled with consistency, and there were times when his all-round performance made the difference between the two teams.
He delivered a tremendous all-round performance against the West Indies back in 2013.
Walking out to bat at 47/5, Afridi struck a counter-attacking 76 off just 55 balls. Giving Pakistan a challenging goal of 225 to defend.
He definitely carried that confidence into his bowling performance, as he swept out the hosts with amazing scores of 7/12.
3. Glenn McGrath, 7/15, Australia vs Namibia, Potchefstroom, 2003
The Australian squad was a force to be reckoned with in the 2003 World Cup, winning the title with ease.
The Namibian squad considered themselves unlucky to have faced a red-hot Glenn McGrath in a game that Australia was anticipated to win, but not as easily as they did.
Defending a big score of 302, Namibia was reduced to 45 runs due to McGrath’s seven-wicket performance.
His 7/15 performance demonstrated how powerful the Australians were and why. Glenn McGrath was considered one of the greatest in the industry.
4. Rashid Khan, 7/18, West Indies vs Afghanistan, Gros Islet, 2017
Rashid Khan, a young player, had already begun to make ripples in international cricket. And was tipped as the next major T20 sensation in 2017.
However, that same year, he had an outstanding effort in the one-day format against the West Indies. Blowing the hosts away.
The Afghans set a moderate aim of 213, which the West Indies were anticipated to easily meet. They couldn’t do anything to stop Rashid Khan’s stunning spell.
5. Wanindu Hasaranga – 7/19, Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe, Colombo, 2024
Sri Lanka had barely defeated Zimbabwe in the second ODI by two wickets. And needed to avoid loss in the third ODI to win the series.
Zimbabwe chose to bat first and got off to a good start. With the openers contributing 43 runs for the first wicket.
However, the debut of Wanindu Hasaranga altered the game for Sri Lanka, as the wristspinner was nearly unplayable.
43/0 quickly became 48/4, as Zimbabwe’s batting collapsed with only 96 runs on the board.
