Despite having a strong team in most of the IPL seasons, Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils have failed to win any title till date. Their best performance has been a final appearance in IPL 2020, when they lost to Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians by five wickets. Delhi topped the points table in IPL 2021 after the league stage, but the tournament was suspended due to COVID-19-related restrictions.
They were semifinalists in the inaugural IPL in 2008, where they lost to eventual champions Rajasthan Royals by a huge margin of 105 runs. They were in semi-finals in IPL 2009 as well, where they meet Deccan Chargers in semi-finals, but Delhi lost the match by six wickets to storm out of the tournament. Delhi Capitals have played 225 matches in IPL so far, of which they have won 100 and lost 119.They won three matches in a tiebreaker while losing one. Their winning percentage in IPL is 45.73 per cent.
5. David Warner (₹6.25 crore)
It was a reunion for David Warner and Delhi Capitals as the franchise bought the Australian opener for ₹6.25 crore in the IPL Mega Auction on Saturday. One of the marquee players in the auction list, Warner attracted bids from Capitals and the Chennai Super Kings before the franchise from Delhi eventually succeeded to secure his services.
Warner began his IPL career with Delhi in 2009 and represented the side in five seasons before being bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Australian star had led the Sunrisers to IPL title in 2016 but fell out with the team management towards the end of the last season.
India’s Mohammed Shami became Gujarat Titans’ maiden auction signing in the IPL auction. The Titans – one of the two new additions to the tournament, roped in the services of India’s right-arm pacer for ₹6.25 crore.
4. Anrich Nortje (₹6.5 crore)
South African pacer Anrich Nortje has been a revelation for DC over the last couple of seasons. Picked up as a replacement player by the franchise during the 2020 season, he ended up making a massive impression. The 28-year-old claimed 22 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 23.27 and a strike rate of 16.63. His extra pace proved to be an X factor as DC reached their maiden IPL final.
The fast bowler played eight matches and claimed 12 wickets at an average of 15.58 and an excellent economy rate of 6.16. DC were so impressed with Nortje’s efforts that they retained him ahead of Kagiso Rabada for the 2022 season. The franchise will have high hopes from him for the upcoming edition too
3. Prithvi Shaw (₹7.5 crore)
Delhi Capitals (DC) named opener Prithvi Shaw among their four retentions heading into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 Mega Auction. DC retained Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje, using up ₹42.5 crore. They will now have ₹47.50 crore left to spend in the auction, which is the lowest remaining budget among the eight existing franchises.
While Pant was the first retention at ₹16 crore, Axar Patel was retained for ₹9 crore. Shaw was retained for ₹7.5 crore and Nortje for ₹6.5 crore. Shaw began his IPL career for DC in 2018 and has since established himself as an opener for them. A swashbuckling batter, he has given DC quick starts, although his consistency has sometimes been an issue.
2. Axar Patel (₹9 crore)
Delhi Capitals (DC) all-rounders Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur recently engaged in some fun banter while playing a carrom game to unwind themselves during the league phase of IPL 2022. Ahead of this season, the Capitals retained Axar Patel for ₹9 crore, while they signed Thakur for ₹10.75 crore at the mega auction
Both have been regular starters for the side and have performed decently for the franchise in IPL 2022 so far. DC recently gave fans a peek into the players’ fun activities on their off days by sharing a short video on their official Instagram handle. In it, fans can catch a glimpse of Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur engaging in a fun game of carrom with amusing banter.
1.Rishabh Pant (₹16 crore)
In time of need the Indian cricket board (BCCI) is standing by Rishabh Pant like a rock. The board is not only take care of his medical requirements but will also look after his commercial interests. The board will pay his 16 Crore IPL Salary from Delhi Capitals in full despite of Pant missing out on IPL this year. Not only this but the board will also pay him his 5 Crore central contract payments in full. Pant will be out of cricket for almost next 6 months
India wicketkeeper & Delhi Capitals captain underwent surgery on his knee on Friday evening. The 25-year-old suffered two tears on his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). InsideSport has already reported that Pant will be out of action for next 6 months.
Pant will not only miss IPL 2023 but now is also doubtful for both Asia Cup 2023 (Sep) & ICC ODI World Cup (Oct-Nov).
