It’s been 11 years since it started in 2008 and since then it has taken over cricket and IPL. 11. There have been around 31 head coaches for various IPL franchises over the years. While many coaches have excelled during their tenure, many have not been successful in the IPL.
Some of the coaches of IPL franchises who could not achieve proper success include Eric Simmons, Shaun Pollock, John Buchanan, Martin Crowe, Allan Donald, and Gary Kirsten.
Two coaches from Chennai Super Kings one coach each from Hyderabad and Bangalore and three coaches each from Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians are part of this list of 10 most successful coaches of IPL.

10. Dav Whatmore
Dav Whatmore has coached the Kolkata Knight Riders for two seasons of the IPL in 2010 and 2011. According to IPL reports, the Kolkata team won 15 out of the total 29 matches played under his leadership.
KKR could not reach the 4th stage in the 2010 IPL, and he remained in the sixth position, in 2011, Kakar reached the playoffs but lost to Mumbai Indians. He is currently the coach of the Kerala Ranji cricket team and has rejuvenated Kerala for the established Ranji Trophy big shots in recent years.
9. Robin Singh
Robin Singh was recognized for being the head coach of Mumbai Indians for 3 seasons from 2010 – 2012, he was also the head coach of the erstwhile franchise Deccan Chargers in the inaugural edition of IPL 2008. Deccan Chargers had a disappointing season, with the team winning only two out of 14 matches and a win percentage of 14.28%.
However, Robin Singh revived his career with the Mumbai Indians and led the Mumbai side to an incredible win percentage of 63.26%. They defeated Mumbai in the final of IPL 2010, but the team lost to CSK in the final.
8. Tom Moody
Tom Moody is the second most experienced head coach in IPL history. The two different franchises have played 137 matches under his leadership and he has won 73 of them. He was also the head coach of Kings XI Punjab for 3 seasons from 2008–2010.
His long stint with Indian Premier League team Sunrisers Hyderabad also ended in August 2022. He has also been appointed Director of Cricket at Desert Vipers, one of the six franchises in the ILT20, which was scheduled to begin in the UAE in January 2023.
7. Jacques Kallis
Jacques Kallis attended as the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2016 and the Kolkata team has played 3 seasons under him. He is a famous South African cricket coach and former professional cricketer. He is mostly recognized as one of the greatest cricketers of all time and as the greatest all-rounder ever to play the game.
In IPL 2016, KKR lost to eventual winners Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator; Whereas in 2017 they lost to Mumbai Indians in the qualifiers. He also saw them lose to Sunrisers Hyderabad in a qualifier match in the 2018 IPL.
6. Ray Jennings
Ray Jennings was the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore for five seasons from 2009–2013. He lost over the club after the debacle of the 2008 season of RCB and led the team to a runner-up finish in IPL 2009. RCB once again finished as runners-up in IPL 2011, while in IPL 2010 they were eliminated at the playoff stage.
He is playing as a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium swing bowler. Ray was also one of South Africa’s leading wicketkeepers during the South African national team’s suspension from international cricket during the apartheid era.
5. Kepler Wessels
Kepler Wessels is a famous South African-Australian cricket commentator and former cricketer. For only one season in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, he was the head coach of Chennai Super Kings. He has also captained South Africa after playing 24 Tests for Australia.
4. Trevor Bayliss
Trevor Bayliss is a famous Australian cricket coach and former first-class cricketer. He was also the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders for four seasons of the Indian Premier League from 2012 to 2015. He played for New South Wales between 1985 and 1997 before becoming a coach.
He started and ensured that under his leadership the Kolkata team won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014. His team has won against CSK in the final; While in the 2012 IPL, they won the IPL 2014 final against Kings XI Punjab.
3. Mahela Jayawardene
Mahela Jayawardene is a famous Sri Lankan former professional cricketer and captain of the Sri Lankan national cricket team. Currently, he is the consultant coach of the Sri Lankan national team and the head coach of the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians.
He was also appointed the head coach of the Mumbai Indians team from IPL 2017. He was then coached by the team for two seasons and achieved much success with Rohit Sharma as captain.
2. Stephen Fleming
Stephen Fleming is currently the head coach of the Indian Premier League. Stephen has also been in charge of two different clubs for 10 seasons so far and has ensured 96 wins in 162 matches. He played left-handed opening batter and an occasional right-arm slow-medium bowler.
1. John Wright
John Wright makes the list as the most successful IPL coach with a win percentage of 59.37. He is a popular former international cricketer who represented – and captained – New Zealand. According to reports he was the coach of the Indian national team and was in charge of Mumbai Indians for 2 seasons in 2013 and 2014.
