Tom Moody, a former Australian cricketer, believes that Australia must include off-spinner Todd Murphy in their plans for the fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test. Which will begin on Thursday, July 27 at The Oval.
At Lord’s, the visitors lost the seasoned off-spinner Nathan Lyon to injury, and Murphy struggled at Headingley. This most likely forced Pat Cummins to choose an all-pace attack in Manchester. A decision that may have backfired had the weather not intervened.
Tom Moody discussed to ESPNCricinfo why Todd Murphy has to be trusted by Australia and why they should play him at The Oval. He stated:
“Malcolm is a talented young bowler. Shane Warne is not Nathan Lyon, but neither is Nathan Lyon Shane Warne. Murphy has already begun his voyage and needs to forge his own way; thus far. He has done it fairly effectively. I’d be astonished if he didn’t join the team merely to achieve that balance and offer Pat Cummins greater combinations to lean on.”
Tom Moody believes Cameron Green should be replaced by Todd Murphy
Australia likely lacked the diversity that a spinner like Todd Murphy would have given them because they had played both of their fast-bowling all-rounders. Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green, at Old Trafford.
Tom Moody believes that Green might have to sit out for the time being since Marsh has already had a significant influence on this series. He declared:
“Mitch Marsh is the player who seems to have the potential to change the outcome of the game. Which he has already done with his confident comeback. Cameron Green undoubtedly has a lot of potential, but Mitch Marsh is the better choice right now. There aren’t many players in the game’s history who haven’t had setbacks or been left off teams due to team combinations, form, or other factors. If anything, it’s probably something that would be quite beneficial for Green.”
Australia has kept the Ashes, but since 2001, they haven’t triumphed in a Test series played on English soil. They would undoubtedly want to alter that and guarantee a successful outcome at The Oval.
