Despite the disappointing performance in the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford Manchester, Tim Paine, a former Australia captain, does not believe Pat Cummins would resign as Australia’s captain.
Many people have commented on how worn out Cummins appeared during the fourth Test, and former Victorian cricketer Darren Berry has said that the fast bowler will step down from captaincy after the Ashes. According to his tweets:
Here’s my opinion. Without a doubt, Pat Cummins is a fantastic cricketer, but keep in mind this message. At the conclusion of the Ashes series, he will step down as captain. The question is whether they return to Smudge or proceed to Head or Marsh. T20 Ashton Turner.
Tim Paine, though, revealed why he would be perplexed if Pat Cummins were to resign from the position during an appearance on SEN Tassie Breakfast. He stated:
Berry isn’t afraid to say controversial things, “Chuck.” It is a weird remark unless he has received some sort of inside information from Pat himself or someone close to him. He may be assuming Pat is exhausted by the way he is staring at him, or he may be interpreting it as Cummins not wanting to do it. That’s not right, and I’m sure it’s not right. If he stepped down, I’d be stunned.
Tim Paine discusses Australia’s injury concerns ahead of the fifth Test
Tim Paine also discussed the shoulder injury sustained by quick bowler Mitchell Starc during the fourth Ashes Test. He believes that the slower bowling of bowlers like Starc and Cummins indicates that they are losing steam.
In response, he said:
“I’m concerned about Pat and ‘Starcy’ coming into the fifth Test because they both appear to be really exhausted. I didn’t simply think their bowling speeds (were an issue) based on how they were acting physically. Patty’s low 130s (km/h) bowling strikes me as being problematic. There were rumors that Starcy may have suffered a tight hamstring in addition to whatever was wrong with his shoulder after diving.
The adjustments Australia makes for the fifth Test will be interesting to see. Many members of the current team were on the team that lost the series four years ago in England when Tim Paine was the captain.
