THESE players are praised by Shikhar Dhawan for their efforts! India’s captain, Shikhar Dhawan, said that Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Shardul Thakur did a “tremendous” job in the first ODI against South Africa on Thursday, October 6, in Lucknow.
During the run chase in the 40-over match, which was delayed by rain, the three kept India’s hopes alive. But as the required run rate went up, Samson was eventually left alone at the end. As a result, India lost the first game of the three-game series by nine runs.
Captain’s remarks
“Very proud of the way the boys played,” Dhawan said in the post-match presentation. “It’s tremendous the way Shreyas, Samson and Shardul played.”
Dhawan, on the other hand, criticized the Indian squad’s fielding. The captain stated that it was the missed opportunities that helped South Africa set a 250-run target. However, these were too many runs, according to Gabbar.
“I thought 250 was too many runs, because the wicket had turn and seam. Even fielding-wise, we leaked a few runs; but it’ll be a good experience and learning for the young boys.”
South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, also praised Sanju Samson’s performance. He said, “A good fight at the end, obviously Sanju pushed us at the end, but the boys stood firm and took us to the win.”
More on the 1st ODI
India got off to a terrible start while trying to reach the 250-run goal. First, India’s openers, Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan, were out quickly. Later, even rising stars Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan were not able to save the situation after India’s early collapse.
India got back on track with the help of Iyer and Samson. But just when it looked like the team still had a chance, Iyer stranded the game after getting a fifty. Shardul joined Samson to contribute to the batting lineup, but India still couldn’t win.
First, the rain delayed the start of the day’s action. But then David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen helped South Africa get to a good score of 249/4. Miller and Klaasen both had scores of 75 and were still unbeaten.
The second ODI between India and South Africa will take place on October 9 in Ranchi.
