The WPL 2024 Eliminator’s Asha Sobhana of RCB talks with Smriti Mandhana. Asha Sobhana, a spinner for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), was instrumental in her team’s five-run victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday, March 15, in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) Eliminator at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
In the last over, Asha Sobhana was tasked with keeping the opposition under 12 runs. The leg-spinner was given the ball by skipper Smriti Mandhana, but viable choices included seasoned pacers like Renuka Singh Thakur and Sophie Devine.

Asha Sobhana of RCB talks with Smriti Mandhana
RCB’s use of the spin formula in the last overs proved effective as they were able to tie the score with close overs including wickets from Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil. MI lost the well-established Harmanpreet Kaur in the 18th over, despite the fact that they just required 20 runs in the last three overs.
After taking over for the team, Asha Sobhana let up just six runs in the last over, which included Pooja Vastrakar’s wicket on the fourth ball. The spinner described what transpired in the middle after RCB’s victory, which sent them into the finals for the first time.
“I was expecting that I may be the one in the 20th over, and that was my thought from the 15th over. When Smriti approached me in the eighteenth over and asked whether I could bowl the twentieth over, I replied, “Yes, of course I can.” “I will protect the target; you need not worry about it,” Asha Sobhana declared following RCB’s Eliminator victory.
“For me personally, I imagine, and since it was the lower-order batters, I believed that no one would step out and hit me, I mean one side was larger and the other side was somewhat smaller so, I knew that if I bowled a little slower, it is going to be challenging for them,” the spinner stated.
Similar situations also saw Asha Sobhana step up for the RCB against the UP Warriorz in the M Chinnaswamy Stadium season opening. That time, the spinner recorded figures of 5-22, securing a victory for her team by just two runs.
