The governing body said on Thursday that a women’s UEFA Nations League will debut the following season as part of the updated qualification system for the 2025 European Championship. Check out the complete details about it below.
The Women’s UEFA Nations League will begin in 2023
Countries will be divided into three categories for the new competition, and clubs will compete in groups of three or four, with promotion and relegation occurring between leagues. The top two clubs from each of the four League A groups will automatically qualify, while the other seven spots will be decided via playoffs between League B and C teams.
In order to replace meaningless friendlies with more competitive matches, UEFA introduced the men’s Nations League in 2018.
UEFA released a statement in which it stated that the “revised model is interconnected, dynamic, and meritocratic, and seeks to create a more competitive environment with greater sporting and commercial appeal.” This year’s lucrative women’s European Championship, which was won by hosts England and established attendance and broadcast viewership records, served as the catalyst for the decision.
We are continuing to invest in women’s football, as I promised this summer. The UEFA Women’s EURO was a historic event, and it is now time to advance women’s national team soccer, according to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.
The senior women’s national teams of the member associations of UEFA, the sport’s European governing body, will compete in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, a planned biannual international women’s football competition.
The competition will consist of three leagues, each of which will have promotion and relegation opportunities, as well as a championship event. Depending on the season, it may also serve as a component of the qualification process for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, UEFA Women’s Championship, and Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
