On Day 2 of the first Test at the Adelaide Oval, Mitchell Marsh was dismissed by the West Indies after they put up a somewhat unusual arrangement for their slip cordon. The all-rounder was bowled out at ‘third slip’ for just five runs. The unusual slip cordon strategy used by the West Indies effectively dismisses Mitchell Marsh in the opening AUS vs. WI Test
The West Indies have made an impact thus far. Even though Australia is still well-positioned to take a commanding lead in the first innings. Shamar Joseph, making his debut, has been actively involved in both bat and ball activities.
Following his dismissals of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne on the first day, the pacer then removed Cameron Green from the game with an outstanding delivery.
After Marsh was dismissed, wicketkeeper Alex Carey saw out the few overs that were left in the session. As of this writing, Australia’s score at the end of Day 2’s first session at the Adelaide Oval is 144-5.
Unusual slip cordon strategy used by the West Indies
After Australia was reduced to 113-4 by the Men in Maroon, who carried on their excellent job from yesterday, Mitchell Marsh arrived at the crease. During his brief visit, the all-rounder appeared uneasy as he only managed to score one run off of the first 23 deliveries he faced.
There were several edges from his brief tenure at the crease that did not extend to the slip cordon. West Indies had to come up with a novel solution to deal with the edges not carrying. And that solution took the shape of an updated slip cordon. The third slip was positioned somewhat nearer to the stumps and at a different angle.
The strategy almost paid off right away when Justin Greaves, who was positioned at “third slip.” He was almost hit by Kemar Roach’s incendiary edge. On the subsequent delivery, though, the strategy paid off as the ball gained momentum. And the fielder made a diving, low catch.
After being asked to bat, West Indies were bowled out for 188 in the first innings.
