Manchester Joined goalkeeper David de Gea has supposedly turned down an underlying agreement offer that included diminished compensation. The Athletic reports that the Red Devils have a one-year extension clause but have agreed not to use it. United, on the other hand, want to reach an agreement on an extension, and negotiations are expected to continue.
De Gea, 32, is wanted by Manchester United to sign a contract extension with lower wages. With a weekly salary of £375,000, he is the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world and the highest-paid goalkeeper at Old Trafford at the moment.
It is said that De Gea believes he is still one of the most important players for Erik ten Hag’s team. The Spanish goalkeeper has kept 18 clean sheets in 42 appearances across competitions. He joined the team from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making him the club’s longest-tenured player.
Ten Hag still backs De Gea as his long-term first-choice goalkeeper, so Manchester United wants him to stay. He has been one of the Red Devils’ best players, making crucial saves despite some shaky performances.
De Gea is working on this under the Dutch coach because Ten Hag is known to like his goalkeepers to play out from the back. The Spaniard is aware that he will have to accept lower wages even though the club wants him to stay.
When De Gea signed his current contract in 2019, he had leverage. When Alexis Sanchez arrived at Old Trafford, he was offered a contract worth £400,000 per week. At the time, the only No. 1 for Manchester United was the Spanish stopper.
In the event that De Gea does leave in the summer, the Red Devils appear to have looked for potential replacements. Ten Hag has been keeping an eye on David Raya of Brentford because of his good season at the Gtech Community Stadium. In 28 matches, he has kept nine clean sheets.
Manchester Joined chief Ten Witch conceded that De Gea’s kicking has been an issue this season:
De Gea has recovered from a disappointing 2021-2022 campaign by making spectacular saves throughout the season. Due to Ten Hag’s limited ability to play the ball, many thought he would immediately slay the Spaniard.
However, the manager of Manchester United has stood by De Gea and appears determined to keep him as his primary shot-stopper at Old Trafford. Ten Hag, however, acknowledged that his season has not been without flaws after a questionable performance against Real Betis.
On March 9, United defeated Manuel Pellegrini’s team at Old Trafford 4-1 in the Europa League round of 16. However, De Gea was flighty in his passing and Ten Witch said following the triumph
I can’t disregard (his kicking), however we have seen many games (where) he did all around well. David is addressing that. He is getting better, and I’m sure he will keep getting better. On April 2, Manchester United returns to action. They face Newcastle Joined at St James’ Park.
