The Selection Of Jason Roy Has Been A “Gambling Gamble” – Rivals Taking Doubt
The Selection Of Jason Roy Has Been A “Gambling Gamble” – Rivals Taking Doubt: Rob Key of the Managing Director of England’s organization, stated that while England had plenty deliberation on their team roster around the Twenty20 World Cup, one of more deliberated over parts was the decision to drop Jason Roy from the squad.
There are mixed feelings about the opening batter of the team. He has played 171 matches, with 5500 runs across both white-ball codes, but he has a rough time here in England, where he is getting 78 runs in 6 T20I matches at 12.66 average right now. There was hope that the Hundred would help him rediscover his touch but that hasn’t happened.
Jonny Bairstow is going to open with Jos Buttler in the World Cup. Ben Stokes will take the middle-order role of Jonny Bairstow.
Even though there are seven T20Is in Pakistan ahead of the global tournament, it would not be possible to make changes to the team’s lineup before the ICC deadline.
Key spent a lot of time figuring out what the best World Cup 11 and squad would be, who would bat first as well. We also thought about who should be an opening pair from this selection. It is unfortunate timing for Jason Roy, considering he has hit a bad patch of form at the worst time.
When we were first trying to announce who we would participate in the World Cup, Pakistan was out of the question. We could see if he had become a better player in that time but we also factor in risk when making decisions. That is why Jonny Bairstow is our favorite option, knowing that he has proven himself before.
Roy was told by Buttler a couple of days ago that he would not be included in the final World Cup squad. The captain wanted to deliver the bad news himself, but Roy also chatted with Key and limited-overs coach Matthew Mott. They all reinforced his belief that he is not finished at international level. He said he was ‘gutted’, but they all encouraged him and made him feel like this isn’t the end of his career.
Andy is a fantastic player but he lost form at the wrong time. He didn’t have time to stop, reset, and get his form back again before the games against South Africa. Close games make it hard for you to change your momentum when one game you’re on a roll.
The man has a lot of confidence, and if he finds that again, he is one of the best openers around when he is at the top of his game. It’s just a case of him finding form, and I’m sure he will have plenty of opportunities in the abundance of T20 cricket around the world to find that form again.
Jason Roy has the potential to do well. I think that the 50-over format is his strongest suit and that we see him as very much part of the set-up. I think that it was too much of a gamble to send him going into Pakistan and straight into Australia.
Alex Hales, who missed out on the 2019 World Cup because of his second failed drugs test, was also discussed. Despite not being selected for the team, Paul Key reiterated that he believed Hales has served his time for his mistakes, and that he was overlooked solely because he wasn’t currently performing at the required level. Even though Hales can play anywhere in the top three and is a consistent scorer in the shorter formats, it still surprised many when he didn’t make it into the squad at all. This decision baffled not only Paul Key but also Alex Hales himself.
Ben Stokes said that Alex Hales would have welcomed back into the team after the Bristol street fight incident. In the press interview for Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes, Ben Stokes said he still considered Alex Hales as his “friend at the time”.
It’s never really been an issue for us as far as we were concerned. We were able to talk about form without Hales.
And he argued why he wasn’t there, which I think is valid. Rather than just whining about being excluded from something behind the scenes, it’s better to pick up the phone and address the situation head-on.
There are a lot of very good players in this time period. Many people say this is a good problem to have because you can’t choose amongst the options without feeling bad. There are also many people who missed being selected. They would be justified in asking why they didn’t receive an opportunity since they showed that they were good enough to be recognized with respect to skills and experience.
There are a few uncertainties with the first choice names. Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, while they have healed their injuries after knee and elbow issues, have not played any competitive cricket this summer. They last played for England during the Test tour of West Indies in March.
Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone and Jos Buttler are nursing injuries and will not participate in the Pakistan tour. Moeen Ali will captain the team in their absence.
Key acknowledges that choosing these players with questionable availability would be a gamble. Key hopes, however, that the time between now and England’s first game against Afghanistan on October 22, which includes seven matches in Pakistan plus three T20Is against Australia and ICC warm-ups on the eve of the tournament, will be enough for these players to prove their match fitness. In addition, the depth of England’s team will allow for any potential injuries to be covered by their 5 un-capped players.
The medical team is optimistic that they can take out who they need to, but with the lack of good injury news, we have to look more closely at what we do as a last resort if one of our player’s falls ill.
As multi-format players, Johnny and Ben find that it is just too much cricket for them. They have played a lot of T20 cricket, IPL cricket, and other forms of cricket as well. They are aware of the format but due to their playing so much they do not think the Cricket World Cup will be good for them. You never know what can happen with this team though, even if Johnny and Ben don’t go to the tournament themselves, there may be others who end up going because of them and seeing new talent.
There is a good chance Wood and Woakes will get back to playing their best towards the end of the Pakistan series. They need to be in rhythm and in form if they are going to play, even if they haven’t played well so far.
It’s good to have those team members back who were absent for a while. Now, it is better if they can take on an active role in the World Cup.
For Pakistan, Key insisted that the floods have not changed the ECB’s stance on making the trip out there. Recently, the death toll has passed 1200 people after Monsoons left a third of the country flooded. Key hopes that despite last winter’s reneging on this trip, England will be able to show solidarity with the PCB for these upcoming T20s and Test series in December. The need to visit Pakistan at this time is both from improving relations with Pakistan and uplifting struggling people.
Marcus Trescothick said it’s a moving picture now. There has been a lot of communication between the people, the Professional Cricketers’ Association, and the ECB [European Central Bank], but it is unclear about whether we’ll go there in the future. I feel like if we go out there and play, the country will have hope.
