The Reason Why Bubba Watson’s PGA Tour Retirement Could Change Golf For Good
The Reason Why Bubba Watson’s PGA Tour Retirement Could Change Golf For Good: Memphis – Bubba Watson has recently announced on Twitter that he has resigned from the PGA Tour. While it seems like a small decision, the potential consequences are huge for four young aspiring professionals.
Jim Furyk, who has been on the golfing tour for 17 seasons and has won 2 Masters championships in that time left last month to join the LIV series. Jim is still recovering from a knee injury that he sustained during the PGA Championship in May which has kept him from competing since then. Because he hasn’t yet played in a LIV event and hadn’t been suspended by the PGA Tour, before his LIV move, Jim remained eligible for the FedEx Cup and he was currently at 151st place with 199.056 points.
Last Sunday, Kim “Tom” H. Joohyung won the Wyndham Championship tournament and earned him a spot in final FedEx Cup Playoff weeks. His move put four players below the threshold for Korn Ferry Tour Finals consideration who had been previously thought to receive spots by virtue of their positions on the points list.
If the four golfers needed more points than an eligible player in order to make it into the KFT Finals, then they needed to surpass a golf tournament’s No. 200 player.
Players meeting the threshold of 400 points would be able to play in next week’s KFT Finals. The threshold is currently at 400. If Jason Dufner moves from last place to third and Jonas Blixt moves from fourth to second, that creates a four-man tie for 200th place and the players are allowed to still play in this week’s KFT Finals
Watson released a statement saying he would be removed from the list by Sunday, but the PGA Tour had no comment on what actions it might take to change the list or whether his resignation will have any effect on the four players.
