The Nepal government recognizes players but failed to recognize the need for infrastructure
The Nepal government recognizes players: In 2012 National Cricket Team won the ICC World Cricket League Division 4 without any promising sports infrastructure. The Nepal government recognized their efforts and decided to report each member of the team with Rs 200,000. It was the first time that the National Cricket Team received an award from the government.
Nepal’s government again awarded the National Cricket Team when they won ICC World Cricket League Division 3 and qualified for the World Cup that was going to be held in Bangladesh. Despite not clearing the first stage of the World Cup the players were awarded Rs 500,000 each.
The government fails to recognize the need for infrastructure
The government has been rewarding the players with Millions. However, they failed to recognize the need for infrastructure. From the time they got their first award and ODI status in 2019 there is not much change in the infrastructure of Nepal cricket. This clearly states that the Nepal government is offering rewards to the players but fails to put effort into creating an environment that will bring out the best in sports persons.
According to Ramesh Kumar Silwal, the former secretary of the national sports council the sports in the country will not develop unless the government’s priority is to provide better infrastructure and handling the cash prize will not develop the country’s infrastructure.
The government needs to understand that rewards are short-term motivation to achieve big goals. They need to provide the players with that environment.
The players should be able to consult with high government officials and let them know what they are and the importance of infrastructure. We might have achieved things in Nepal Cricket, but that is solely on the player’s will.
The condition of other sports in the country is even worse. Nepal started playing Asian Games in its first edition but we have earned 22 bronze and two silver medals so far. He gave an example of Indian player Neeraj Chopra stating ” The Indian government has spent millions before he earned a gold medal for the country in the Olympics”. Nepal doesn’t spend enough for the athletes to make them ready for the tournaments.
