The Mannarino Win Propels him to Second Round : Andreev defeated Melzer in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open. Igor Andreev eliminated Jurgen Melzer with a 7-5 6-3 win on Monday in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open, the final men’s tournament before the US Open.
Igor Andreev of Russia easily won the 2nd round of the Winston-Salem Open on Monday. Melzer retired vs. Andreev after being on the receiving end of a 7-5, 6-3 loss.
Melzer was struggling to cope with Andreev’s serves – some of which were clocked at 125 mph (201 kph). Andreev won 77 percent of his first serve points, ranking him 79th in the ATP.
Lleyton Hewitt, a player of the Australian tennis association, was eliminated in the first round with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) loss to Nicolas Kavcic from Slovenia. Kavcic didn’t arrive in Winston-Salem until 3 am on monday.
Karel Kavcic is pleased with his win against John, saying he just needed to try a little bit harder. John, who has been on a long recovery from an injury, has won 28 career singles tournaments with two grand slam victories along the way.
Hewitt said that Kavcic’s performance was impressive, he had no obvious weaknesses and his serve and volley game are solid.
The 16 seeded players received bye rounds, with Andy Roddick receiving a bye for No. 1. The lower seeds then continued to square off against each other in the second rounds. Baghdatis defeated Sweeting 7-5, 6-1
Baghdatis was able to find a way to succeed, and the most important thing is that he won. Nishikori beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 1-6 6-4 7-6 (5) in their first round match.
In the first round, Israel’s Dudi Sela defeated Italy’s Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-2; Belgium’s Steve Darcis topped Portugal’s Frederico Gil 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; First, Julien Benneteau of France beat Brazil’s Ricardo Mello 6-1, 6-3. Then, Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq advanced when Austria’s Andreas Haider-Maurer retired with Berlocq leading 7-5, 4-1.
American Michael Russell beat France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2; Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin topped Germany’s Matthias Bachinger, 7-6 (1), 6-1; and France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin beat Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (4).
