The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a short-format, T20 cricket tournament known for its exciting games and explosive batting. Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League has been a platform for some of the most thrilling and high-scoring cricket matches in the world.
With some of the biggest names in the game representing eight franchise teams, the IPL has consistently produced exciting and memorable moments for fans worldwide. High run totals aren’t uncommon in the IPL. In fact, it’s considered a poor effort if teams fail to score above 200 runs on certain grounds.
But sometimes teams take it up a notch and register humungous totals that seem like ODI totals. Some of the most popular grounds, Eden Garden Stadium in Kolkata and M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore are notorious for being batting havens and a graveyard for bowlers. Many teams have even chased down targets above 200 runs in such stadiums.

9. Mumbai Indians (235/9)
Mumbai Indians (MI) posted the highest total of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season when they scored 235/9 in their stipulated 20 overs against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Abu Dhabi on Friday. With skipper Rohit Sharma choosing to bat first after winning the toss – MI went into the match needing a win by more than 170 runs to get into the playoffs – Ishan Kishan played a quickfire knock to set up the foundation for a big total.
Kishan scored 84 off 32 balls before Suryakumar took charge of the innings with 82 runs from 40 balls to get MI to the highest score by a team in the IPL 2021 season.
Kishan hit 11 fours and four sixes in his explosive knock while Suryakumar hit 13 fours and three sixes. Jason Holder was the pick of the SRH bowlers with figures of 4/52.
8. Chennai Super Kings (235/4)
Devon Conway smashed his fourth consecutive fifty of IPL 2023 while Ajinkya Rahane dazzled with an unbeaten 29-ball 71 and Shivam Dube slammed a quick 21-ball half-century to propel Chennai Super Kings to a massive 235/4 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Conway continued his impressive show while Dube attacked the spinners effortlessly and Rahane went after both pace and spin, timing his shots magnificently as Chennai posted the highest IPL score at this venue and against Kolkata
7. Royal Challenger Banglore (235/1)
In the 2015 edition of IPL, RCB stunned the Mumbai Indians while batting first and it was once again the duo of Kohli and De Villiers that reigned supreme against the eventual champions. Once again, Chris Gayle got out early but then, there was no more success for MI in the innings. Kohli and De Villiers together added 215 runs for the second wicket stand.
While Kohli scored an unbeaten 82 off 50 balls, De Villiers was in his elements yet again smashing an unbeaten 133 off just 59 balls. The duo together smashed 25 fours and 8 sixes during their stay in the middle. Thanks to their gigantic knocks, RCB smashed 235 runs for the loss of one wicket in 20 overs.
In response, Mumbai Indians fought hard thanks to knocks from Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard. But they could only 196 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs.
6. Chennai Super Kings (240/5)
The second highest total for Chennai Super Kings was registered in the inaugural season in 2008 against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). It was the 2nd game of the tournament in Mohali. CSK won the toss and batted first. Chennai had a shaky start and lost three wickets for just 62 runs in 7.1 overs. But Michael Hussey kept the scoring rate high and was scoring runs at a rapid pace.
He reached his century and made an unbeaten 116* off 54 balls, including eight fours and nine sixes. Suresh Raina (32 off 13) and S Badrinath (31 off 14) made good cameo appearances for the team. Thus, CSK went on to score a huge total of 240/5 in their first innings. Chasing the target, Punjab also had some good contributions, but they ended up at 207/4 and lost the match by 33 runs.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders (245/6)
Kings XI Punjab were in another high-scoring but thrilling match when Kolkata Knight Riders registered a massive 245 run total in 20 overs. Sunil Narine was the man of the match. The West Indies all-rounder opened for KKR and scored 75 runs off 26 deliveries. KXIP put up a fight, with captain Ravichandran Ashwin and the team doing their best but to no avail. KKR won by 31 runs.
4. Chennai Super Kings (246/5)
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals played in a classic match in 2010. CSK scored 246 runs batting first with 5 wickets to spare. RR also played incredibly but could only manage to reach 223 runs. CSK’s Murali Vijay was the MVP of the match, having scored 127 runs in 56 balls.
3. Royal Challengers Bangalore (248/3)
It’s a rare scenario when two players score a century in the same T20 match. RCB accomplished the feat in 2016 against Gujarat Lions. Virat Kohli scored 109 runs in 55 balls, while AB de Villiers scored 129 runs in 52 deliveries. Gujarat Lions were restricted to 104 runs in 20 overs.
2. Lucknow Super Giants (257/5)
Lucknow Super Giants nearly overtook RCB’s near-unbeatable record when they scored 257 runs in 20 overs, losing only 5 wickets. LSG batted first against Punjab Kings, and every player of the team entered the pitch and began hitting boundaries. Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran were the MVPs, scoring 72 off 40 and 45 off 19, respectively. PBKS also batted well and would have won on any other day but fell short by 56 runs even after scoring 201 runs.
1. Royal Challengers Bangalore (263/5)
April 23, 2013, was a historic night in Indian Premier League. Playing against Pune Warriors India, the beloved IPl franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore scored a gargantuan run total of 263 at the loss of just 5 wickets. RCB’s star player Chris Gayle alone contributed 175 runs and remained not out. That is considered a respectable team score in IPL.
A few more balls and Gayle would have smashed a double century in T20 cricket. Other RCB players like Tillakaratne Dilshan, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers played second fiddle as Gayle etched his name forever in the history books. Pune Warriors India was restricted to 133/9.
