The internet lauds Harmanpreet Kaur’s brilliant response to the commentator’s analysis of Deepti Sharma’s runout. Team India captain Harmanpreet Kaur praised her player Deepti Sharma for a brilliant, smart runout in the 3rd IND vs. ENG ODI on September 24 at Lord’s in London. This helped India get the last England wicket and win the series 3-0 for the first time on an English ground. Deepti was bowling the 44th over of the chase. Charlotte Dean walked out of her crease too far before Deepti released the ball. So she stopped in the middle of her run and took off the bails. The third umpire said that it was an OUT, so India won the match!
The ICC has also adopted the MCC Laws of Cricket, which say that running out the non-striker is a valid way to get rid of a player. But in the books, it was also called “unfair play.” But keep in mind that the “run out” dismissal will no longer be in the “Unfair Play” section as of October 1.
“Running out of the non-striker: The Playing Conditions follow the Laws in moving this method of effecting a Run out from the ‘Unfair Play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section,” read the ICC release.
What Deepti did was not unfair, and India did not win the match in an “unfair” way, as former England cricketers Nasser Hussain, James Anderson, and Stuart Broad all said. However, there was a war of words between cricketers across the world about the runout, which some media outlets called “controversial.”
Harmanpreet’s epic reply
After the game, the Sky Sports commentator asked Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur about the run-out. She asked her, “What do you have to say about that last dismissal (Deepti Sharma runout of Charlotte Dean)?” Harmanpreet tried to avoid answering this question. But the commentator pointed out that she was trying to avoid answering the question about the run-out.Harmanpreet then did not hold back and gave a befitting reply: “To be honest, I thought you will ask about all the 10 wickets which was not easy to take as well [on being probed about the last wicket]. It’s part of the game I don’t think we have done something new. It shows your awareness, what batters are doing. I will back my players, she hasn’t done something outside the rules. At the end of the day a win is a win and we will take that.”
