Shardul Thakur or Jaydev Unadkar will allegedly have to be chosen by the national selection committee for the 15-person ICC ODI World Cup team, which must be submitted by September 5.
The ICC regulations state that squads will have till September 27. Or one week before the start of the event in India, to make changes to their initial roster.
Several positions are still open, particularly in light of the current injury situation. Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj are most likely to make up the final fast bowling unit, with Hardik Pandya serving as the seam bowling all-rounder.
The performances in the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup and the three-match ODI series against Australia will help Team India trim down from the present group of roughly 18–19 players.
Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Umran Malik are not likely to make the final roster, especially since two of them were selected for the 2023 Asian Games squad. As a result, Shardul Thakur and Jaydev Unadkat will compete in a shootout for the position.
Since 2019, Thakur has taken the most wickets for Team India in the 50-over format. And his superior batting skills have made him the clear favorite over Unadkat. With regard to the left-arm seamer, he played in his first ODI in ten years during the just-completed series against the West Indies.
The third spinner’s spot for the ICC ODI World Cup is not subject to much discussion in the eyes of the selectors and management, according to a report by PTI.
Due to the subcontinental setting of the World Cup, the spin will be a key factor in the events. Due to their reputation, merit, and current performance, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are sure inclusions. There is now room for a third spinner between Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel.
KL Before the 2023 Asia Cup and World Cup, Rahul may need to compete in a match simulation to demonstrate his ability to hold down the fort for the whole 50 overs
Due to Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul’s injuries. Team India is severely lacking in wicket-keeping options, leaving only Ishan Kishan as a choice. While it is safe to assume that Pant won’t be competing in the highlight event. Rahul still has a chance to make it.
Midway into the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Karnataka-born wicketkeeper-batter suffered an injury. But he is now making progress toward a full recovery. However, the management intends to put Rahul to the test with a 50-over match simulation because he would be required to bat in the middle of the order as a wicketkeeper-batter during the Asia Cup and possibly even the World Cup.
On the condition of anonymity, a BCCI source spoke to PTI and said:
“The team management and selectors want to give both Rahul and Shreyas every opportunity to recover. Rahul is undoubtedly much ahead of schedule in terms of his recuperation and progressing toward being fully match-fit. However, he must play out a match simulation in which he can hold down the fort for 50 overs.
Added the source:
“The Instagram videos indicate that he is progressing well, but 50 overs of keeping and at least 30 overs of batting in the heat will demonstrate how his operated thigh is holding up in the humid environment. The best news for the Indian squad would be if he performed well in his upcoming nine games (six assuming India plays in the Asia Cup final and three against Australia).
Prior to the World Cup, Team India’s basic lineup for the Asia Cup and bilateral matches against Australia is likely.
Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Surykumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk), Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Shardul Thakur, Jaydev Unadkat, Mukesh Kumar, and Yuzvendra Chahal.
