The CMAA Announces The Schedule For Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games
The CMAA Announces The Schedule For Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games: Commonwealth Games 2022 was quite a hit among the live audiences, with many new games and events being added to the list of events that would take place in 2026. Some of these include women’s cricket and Indian wrestling team outperforming other countries, experienced a winning streak in weightlifting, boxing, and some other sports.
Australia won the most medals with a total of 178. England, who won the second-most with 176, included 57 gold medals. Canada won third-most with 92 medals, which includes 26 gold. India and New Zealand both came in fourth and fifth places with 22 and 20 gold medals, respectively.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth. It will take place over 4 sites in Victoria, Australia—Bendigo, Gippsland, Ballarat and Geelong.
The opening ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games will be held in Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, in a departure from previous games. The event will not be held in one major city but across a number of cities outside the capital city. It will take place over twelve days between 17 and 29 March 2026.
The host city was originally expected to be selected at the 2019 Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda. On 16 June 2019, the CGF confirmed that it would decide the host city in 2020; however, during the pandemic and lack of interest from cities, the CGF delayed announcing a decision until December 2021. In December 2021, reporting that it would announce a host some time in March 2022 exhibited no progress. Eventually on 12 April 2022 Victoria was announced as the host city after two months of an exclusive dialogue process with the CGF.
In order to encourage towns to bid for the Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) implemented new regulations that restricted what sports could be conducted at future events. Despite this, 16 of the 2026 Victorian Games sports—13 in total—were selected by a small committee. The sport of swimming and diving, as well as athletics, badminton, boxing, beach volleyball, cycling, gymnastics, hockey & hockey skating (for now), lawn bowls (also for now), netball (also for now), rugby sevens, squash & racquetball are on the roster.
In April 2022, India and the Commonwealth Games Association demanded that archery, shooting and wrestling be streamlined for the event to take place. By July 2022, the state government released details of how to express interest in additional sports.
