THE BEST AIR SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE SOON. Hundreds of air sports contests, whether they be international or continental championships, local, regional, or national tournaments, are taking place worldwide throughout our action-packed season. In order to compete, witness, and judge these competitions, thousands of fervent participants, organizers, and authorities will assemble.
With our guide to the best air sports championships and category 1 events taking place in the sky throughout the remaining months of 2022, you won’t miss an event in your nation or in your sport:
THE 2022 WORLD GAMES
The World Games, which are the second-largest multi-sport event in the world after the Olympic Games and include not one but two air sports, are a key highlight of the 2022 calendar. The magnificent event, which will take place between July 7 and July 11, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, will include both canopy piloting and drone racing.
AEROMODELLING
With competition in seven divisions and various classes within each category, aeromodelling is one of FAI’s most inclusive air sports. The 2022 FAI F3DE World Championships for Pylon Racing Model Aircraft, which take place in Indiana from July 8 to 14, are taking place concurrently with The World Games (see above) in the United States. Other international competitions are held in Europe, including the F4 Scale Model Aircraft in Tonsberg, Norway (July 23–July 30) and the F3K Model Gliders in Martin, Slovakia (July 24-July 29), followed by the F3J Model Gliders in Tekovsky Hradok, Slovakia (July 31–August 5, also in Slovakia).
Seniors and children will compete in speed, aerobatics, team racing, and combat events at the 2022 FAI F2 World Championships for Control Line Model Aircraft, which will run from August 8–13 in Wroclaw, Poland. Junior and senior F5B Electric Model Aircraft racers will compete in the 2022 FAI F5B World Championship for Electric Model Aircraft from September 11–17 in Dupnitsa, Bulgaria. Following the 2022 FAI F1D World Championships for Indoor Model Aircraft in Romania between December 12 and 15, F3F Model Gliders will compete in Hanstholm, Denmark from 2-8 October.
Young pilots will participate in the glider, wakefield, and piston motor disciplines at the FAI F1ABP Junior World Championships For Free Flight Model Aircraft. It takes place in Pordim, Bulgaria, from July 25 to July 30. In August, there will be five more European Championships for aeromodelling in addition to the World Championships. There are categories for free-flying slope soaring gliders, electric-driven thermal duration gliders, and spatial modeling.
BALLOONING
The 64th Coupe Aeronautique Gordon Bennett, which will take place from September 1–10 in Saint Gallen, Switzerland, will be the biggest ballooning competition. For the 64th iteration of the event, 19 gas balloons will soar through the air. The two crew members will try to fly the farthest without stopping with the help of teams on the ground. This illustrious race is a staple of the ballooning calendar where anything can occur! The 24th World Hot Air Balloon Championships, which will take place from September 17–23 in Murska Sobota, Slovenia, shortly after, will feature pilots from 33 different nations.
GENERAL AVIATION
In 2022, the General Aviation Commission will hold an international competition in two categories. The 25th World Precision Flying Championship will take place in Albi, France, from August 20–27. The 22nd World Rally Flying Championship, with four flight days and one reserve, will take place in Brits, South Africa, from November 13–19.
GLIDING
In Porcinai, Kaunas, Lithuania, from July 2–16, the 4th World 13.5m Class Gliding Championships will take place. Organizers claim that 21 nations are represented. The FAI European Gliding Championships, which are also taking place here, are also going on. A short time later, from 23 July to 6 August, Szeged, Hungary will host the 37th World Gliding Championships. The 11th Women’s World Gliding Championships will take place from August 13–27 in Husbands Bosworth, UK, and bring together female glider pilots. Between July 31 and August 24, Tabor, Czech Republic will host the FAI 12th Junior World Gliding Championships. There will be 30 pilots in the standard class and forty-four in the club class competing.
HANG GLIDING
The 21st FAI European Hang Gliding Class 1 Championship will be held in Italy from July 10 through 23. Class 2 pilots will compete in the 21st World Hang Gliding Class 2 Championships in Aspres sur Buech, France from July 25 through August 6.
MICROLIGHTS AND PARAMOTORS
The 17th FAI World Microlight Championships, which will take place in Hoisin from July 23–30, and the 4th World Paramotor Slalom Championships, which will take place in Strachotin from September 10–17, are two category 1 competitions that will be contested in the Czech Republic this year. The classic and autogyro classes are attended by solo and two-person teams in Hoisin. Men’s and women’s solo landplane and foot launched RPL 1 T and RPF 1 T paramotor slalom pilots, respectively.
PARAGLIDING
There are two cats. 1 paragliding events, both European: For the cross-country competition at the 16th FAI European Paragliding Championships, which take place in Pantelej – Nis, Serbia, from July 25 to August 6th, 129 pilots have confirmed their participation. Pilots from 29 nations are registered to compete in Sibiu, Romania from September 2–10 at the 7th FAI European Paragliding Accuracy Championships. From now till June 29 in Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan, are the 4th FAI Asian Paragliding Accuracy Championships.
POWER AND GLIDER AEROBATICS
Between August 2 and 13, the 31st FAI World Aerobatic Championships in Power and Glider Aerobatics will be held in Leszno Airfield in Poland. So far, teams from ten nations have registered. The world’s top aerobatic glider pilots will assemble in Issoudun, France, for either the 12th World Advanced Aerobatic Glider Championships or the 24th World Aerobatic Glider Championships.
SKYDIVING
The 45th CISM World Military Parachuting Championships, a Cat 1 event, is now taking place in Guessing, Austria, and is being held under the former name of parachuting. It runs through June 30. With The World Games, which brings together the top canopy pilots from across the world in Birmingham, Alabama, the USA from July 7–12, skydiving 2022 will have two headline acts in addition to this present event. The 37th FAI World Freefall Style and Accuracy Landing Championships and the 11th FAI Junior World Freefall Style and Accuracy Landing Championships will then be held in the Czech Republic Aeroklub Strakonice later in July.
The 2022 World Parachuting Championships will once again feature many disciplines in Eloy, Arizona. Skydive Arizona is in charge of organizing the event, which will take place in Eloy, Arizona, USA, from October 9 to 26, 2022. The following competitions will be part of this multi-sport, high-adrenaline event:
