The Athletes’ Big Breakouts – Anthony Richardson and Jason Marshall
The Athletes’ Big Breakouts – Anthony Richardson and Jason Marshall: Anthony Richardson, the quarterback for Florida football, and Jason Marshall, a cornerback, were both named to Athlon Sports’ list of the 50 Best Breakout Players for the 2022 season.
Steve Lassan of Athlon Sports made a list, and his assessment of Richardson is pretty close to what people outside of Gainesville tend to think. His skill can’t be questioned. His scope and speed are things that any trainer would look for in a unique caller. With more time as a starter, Richardson should be able to improve on these skills and become a flexible starter in the SEC.
Lassan’s Opinion
Here’s what Lassan said about the starting quarterback for Florida.
“Richardson isn’t lacking in talent and advantage, and the hope at Gainesville is that new coach Billy Napier can help sophomore develop more overall consistency for 2022. Richardson showed big-play ability (8.1 yards per game) but also needed to decrease the errors (five picks on 64 attempts). The guess here is that Napier will increase Richardson’s game this fall.”
Marshall, on the other hand, hasn’t been talked about as much as one of his offensive teammates this offseason. The best defensive back at Palmetto High in Miami played at a level that matched the DBU name, but he also showed signs of being young.
Lassan is talking about the numbers, and while they show how well Marshall played as a true freshman, they don’t show how he will definitely get better with Corey Raymond as his new cornerbacks’ coach. The former five-star recruit can go as far as she wants.
Here are the things Lassan said about the Marshall.
“Marshall was rated a five-star prospect in Florida’s Class of 2021 and didn’t disappoint in his freshman year on campus. According to the PFF, he was tackled 38 times over 634 snaps and only allowed 14 receptions in 13 games. The Miami native also recorded 23 tackles, one interception, and three pass breakups. Marshall is already on his way to becoming one of the top cornerbacks in the SEC.”
Richardson, Marshall, and the rest of the Gators will start their season at home on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. EDT against the No. 7 Utah Utes on ESPN.
