The Story of the Switzerland National Cricket Team – An Insight into History
Since the year 1817, professional cricket has been played in Switzerland. Here’s a quick timeline of the significant happening with or related to the Switzerland national cricket team.
- In 1985, the association became a member of the International Cricket Council.
- In 1997, they held the European Nations Cup in Zuoz, which was the first tournament for European affiliate members. There were seven teams in the tournament, and they came in fifth.
- Then, in 1999, 2001, and 2003, they played in the European Cricket Council Trophy. Their best performance was in 1999 when they made it to the semifinals. Then, in 2004, they went to Slovenia to play in the European Representative Championship. In that tournament, which had six teams, they came in third.
- In 2014, it changed its name to Cricket Switzerland.
After moving up from Division Five, they played in Division Four of the European Championships in 2009. They played Austria, Cyprus, Finland, Luxembourg, and Slovenia. Switzerland was supposed to play in the 2011 ICC European Division II tournament in Belgium, but disagreements within the country forced them to tag out. As a result, Switzerland moved down to Division III. Two different groups tried to run cricket in Switzerland, which led to these internal problems. Switzerland was kicked out of the International Cricket Council because of these problems and other violations of membership rules.
After they fixed these governance problems, the authorities sent a request to join the ICC again in October 2020. Finally, on July 23, 2021, Switzerland became an associate member of the ICC. Switzerland has more than 30 clubs that play sports right now.
