Sunil Gavaskar ponders the shots Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli chose against Pakistan. Sunil Gavaskar, a famous batsman, thought that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should have been more careful about how they chose their shots when India played Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022. India had to chase down 148 runs, but they lost KL Rahul early on. However, Rohit and Virat put on 49 runs for the second wicket, which helped them come back.
Mohammad Nawaz, a left-handed bowler, got both of them out when they tried to hit big shots down the ground. In fact, Nawaz was on his way to a hat trick after getting rid of the most important Indian batters. As a result, the Men in Blue went from being 50-1 after 7.5 overs to 53-3 in just eight balls.
Gavaskar on Virat and Rohit’s game
Gavaskar thought that Kohli should have taken advantage of his good luck and made a big score. But instead, Kohli got a break early on when Naseem Shah dropped him in the slips. After that, Haris Rauf surprised him with a bouncer, but he still got six runs.
“Rahul played just one ball, so you can’t judge anything from that. Rohit and Kohli had the opportunity to bat for some time, they got runs. All these earlier times when people were talking about Kohli’s form, I kept on saying that he is not having any luck.”
“Today, he had a lot of luck, drop catches, a lot of inside edges, which went so close to the stumps, he had the luck. But he did capitalise on it and played some very fine shots,” Gavaskar said.
“But one had expected that with the kind of start that he had, he should have got around 60-70. He got out immediately after Rohit got out. Both of them got out to forgettable shots. At that stage, those shots were not necessary as the asking rate wasn’t 19 or 20 for them to attempt sixes at that stage,” Gavaskar stated.
“It was required for them to get going, get to 70-80 and then maybe go for the big shots. That should be learning from this game,” he added.
While Rohit was out on 12, Virat, who was born in Delhi, scored 35 with three fours and one six in 34 balls.
India won by five wickets at Dubai International Cricket Stadium after Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja took over after Rohit and Virat were out.
