Sunil Gavaskar points out the duplicity in pitch evaluation, saying, “This kind of excuse that the curator got it wrong is typical of the SENA countries”
The first home series of Team India’s current WTC cycle has been planned against England. The two teams will play a five-match Test series commencing on January 25 in Hyderabad.
England, particularly its pundits, have been loud in their criticism of the Indian pitches throughout the years, and the next visit will be no different.
Sunil Gavaskar points out the duplicity in pitch evaluation
Sunil Gavaskar has spoken out about the obvious inconsistency in pitch evaluation of Indian rank turners in comparison to the treatment of abroad wickets. The Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town recently hosted the shortest Test match in history, with India defeating South Africa by seven wickets to tie the series.
After deciding to bat first, the Proteas were skittled out for just 55 runs, and the surface remained a topic of conversation throughout the two days of action. South Africa’s batting coach, Ashwell Prince, voiced dissatisfaction with the pitch’s condition, while Rohit Sharma indicated that he did not mind such surfaces as long as a similar hushed treatment is used on Indian wickets as well.
The pitches on the subcontinent have been regularly analyzed, with the 2023 ODI World Cup and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy becoming some of the most recent. Even before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy began, Team India was accused of ‘pitch doctoring’ due to a dry area on the Nagpur field for the series opener.
“These kinds of excuses that the curator made a mistake are typical of SENA countries.” When our curators prepare a dry pitch, it’s ‘chicanery,’ as a former Australian captain quipped last year after the Aussies were crushed in the first two Tests,” Gavaskar said in his Mid-day column.
As part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, Team India will play a total of ten Tests on home soil in 2024, and the pitches are going to be the talk of the town.
