Spurs and Ajax ultimately agreed on a trade for the 24-year-old after the Dutch champions’ original £20 million bid was refused in June.
Bergwijn, a Dutch international, has been linked with a transfer to Ajax for over a month after falling out of favour with Spurs manager Antonio Conte. The 24-year-old has previously represented Ajax at the youth level.
After joining Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020, he scored eight goals in 83 appearances.
Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder stated that Steven’s decision to join Ajax demonstrates his desire. He is a multi-talented player. He is extremely motivated and focused on reaching his goals. Coach continued by saying, They are glad that they were able to sign him; he adds a new quality to their team.
Steven Charles Bergwijn, a professional footballer from the Netherlands who now plays as a winger for both the Netherlands national team and Eredivisie club Ajax, was born on October 8, 1997.
In October 2018, Ronald Koeman selected Bergwijn for the Netherlands team, giving him his first full international call-up. On October 13, 2018, he started his first game for his team against Germany in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League A.
Bergwijn was born to Suriname-born parents in Amsterdam. He started his professional in the Ajax youth programme and stayed there until 2011 owing to a disagreement with a trainer, but he made the decision to leave. He quickly signed with PSV, and on August 9, 2014, versus Achilles ’29 in the second division, Bergwijn made his first-team debut for Jong PSV. After 77 minutes of a 2-0 home victory, he took over for Elvio van Overbeek.
