Sir Wasim Jaffer has stated his concerns over Sanju Samson, India’s No. 4 ODI player on the way to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Samson is a wicketkeeper and batsman.
Samson hit lofted drives early in his innings in the third ODI against the West Indies, which led Jaffer to claim that his high-risk style may not be appropriate for the vital position.
Wasim Jaffer on ESPNCricinfo stated, “He (Sanju Samson) played well, but he plays a very high-risk game.”If you examine his innings, he started off by hitting those two sixes. He could have exited if he had mistimed, but it connected and went for six. With Sanju Samson, such has been the situation. I thus have my suspicions about anyone who bats at No. 4 and plays like that.
Jaffer stated that he did not object to Samson’s aggressive demeanor. He did, however, make the point that the player’s performances have been remarkably uneven, which is quite worrying.
The former Indian opener said, “That’s fine if the team management gives him that license, but consistency is also an issue. You want to cause damage, but you don’t want to score in just two or three of the six innings. That worries me. We have seen that there are some excellent innings and some really weak stretches in the IPL as well. That’s what happened. He must thus study.”
Notably, Sanju Samson’s homecoming ODI in Barbados saw him go out after scoring just nine runs. In the third and final game against the West Indies, he did succeed in turning things around, hitting 51 off 41 balls with the aid of four sixes and two boundaries.
Sir Wasim Jaffer on Suryakumar Yadav “There is a lot of work to do”
Suryakumar Yadav received yet another chance to demonstrate his value in ODI cricket. He only managed 78 runs at an average of 26.00 in the three-match series against the West Indies, unable to accumulate many significant runs.
Jaffer lauded Suryakumar for his 35-run performance in the third ODI but noted that the dynamic batsman still has to grow in the format.
“Suryakumar Yadav stalled out. I believed he had the platform prepared. He had no negative effects. I think he played well despite getting 35. But in this format, he has a lot to work on, Wasim Jaffer explained.”
The following appearance for Suryakumar will come in India’s forthcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, which gets underway on Thursday, August 3 in Trinidad.
